Not me but my Dad. Age 67, pretty fat (although vegetarian??) and two knackered knees. No major health complaints other than high blood pressure, but yesterday had a stroke out of nowhere. He seems to have got incredibly lucky and looks like no lasting damage, should be discharged today. Unfortunately he's the type to bury his head in the sand health wise and not sort himself out / get help.

What's a good way to get him in shape in a safe way, I was thinking a recumbent bike? I can't imagine going out for a jog will do him much good. Obviously need to approach diet too but I'm fairly comfortable with that aspect.

If he's not accustomed to exercise then long walks probably the best option initially. Buy him a dog, or a copy of Wainwright's.

Perhaps not, but it depends how badly and in which way they are knackered. Cycling perhaps a better bet then.

Walking or swimming.

He should look at changing his diet to lose the weight. No-one can run off a diet that makes you fat, least of all someone already overweight and in their late 60s.

I don't consider recumbent bikes safe - the rider has limited visibility in traffic and is less visible to other road users.

Get him a normal bike and try to get him to work it into his daily routine - my 79 year old dad cycles everywhere which keeps him fit.
