Registration number fraud/scam
Discussion
I have just been scammed for a registration number. I advertised the number online, a guy rang up said he wanted to buy the number. He asked me to send a photo of the V750 to make sure it was genuine. I covered my name & address and sent a photo. I thought I had to sign the document personally in at least 2 places to sell the number. Now the number has been assigned to a car and worse the number is up for sale at a very reputable dealer. Can’t get hold of anyone at DVLA and police don’t seem interested. Value £3700. I’m a bit lost here. Help please.
I recall that only the postcode and V750 number is needed to assign the plate using the online system.
I would get in touch with the dealer and let them know that police are involved in an allegation of theft, won’t get your plate back but may stop/delay it being sold on further.
Interested to hear what DVLA have to say about this.

Has he put it on a car then immediately taken it off to sell? That's fast work by him & the DVLA!
Sorry to hear about this.
The Number is Still on the car. I can’t get in touch with dvla but the thief didn’t seem to have much trouble. Should the police do anything ? They are phoning me in the morning.Sorry to hear about this.

Well, it is fraud/theft so I'd imagine the police should be involved.
Generally speaking, the police have zero interest in fraud as it's too difficult to get evidence and a conviction. Requires some work in which they have no interest. Ask anyone who works for a fraud department of a bank.....OddCat said:

I have not signed the V750 to sell this Registration number. How can it be right that the DVLA can assign it to a vehicle not belonging to the name of the owner on the ‘Certificate of Entitlement’. This is just so wrong.Because to do it online you only need the V750 number and the V5 of the car you want to assign it to.

The V750 number is all you need to assign/transfer it to someone else.
You have given him all he needs.

So is that it? £3700 registration number just gone... as simple as that. I’ve only had it 3 weeks. That can’t be right surely. DVLA have given it to someone who doesn’t own it.https://www.personalisedvehicleregistration.servic...

I hate to say this, but you have given him the number. Probably shouldn't have told the police. You would have been better to call DVLA and ask why you can't transfer it. Then when they said it has already been transferred ask how that is possible? Play dumb.
Say that someone from DVLA must have given that number to someone else.
Hopefully the police can do something for you? Gutted for you mate.

It’s not an unusual fraud unfortunately.
People also advertise their plates on eBay with the certificate and someone’s uses the details from it to assign it to their car.
Contact DVLA and they’ll sort, although may take some time due to covid19.

I take it you bought it from the DVLA?
The reason I ask is there are plenty of fraudulent V750s floating around as well.
Are you sure you actually bought the plate is what I'm getting at?
How long has that plate been on his car? Maybe he is the true owner?
Maybe you and that dealer both think they have a plate to sell but the reality is they just have a fake V750?

I bought the plate direct from the May DVLA timed auction. It s genuine. I’ve dealt with the dealer / selling agent previously. He’s said he wished he could help me more... hands tied

I’d write to the dealer recorded mail to advise him the number has been stolen and not to sell it. I’d obtain a crime reference number.Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
