I'm currently in the process of replacing all the cheap tat the previous owners of my GSXR added and have had an issue with the bar ends. One came out fine but the other has stripped the thread inside the bars. I'm thinking of buying a tap and die set and possibly helicoiling it, problem is that the tap and die sets seem to be for aluminium and softer metal (I presume the bars are steel). Does anyone know if one of these sets would work? Cheers

Unless you're drilling and tapping something really exotic you can use the same drill/tap for steel or aluminium. Don't buy on price though, cheap tools are a false economy.

Just buy a decent quality tap in the size you need , you must be looking at cheap tat sets .

Just buy a heli-coil kit for the original thread bolt and it will come with the correct drill, tap and threaded insert you need. Just re-tapping out the stripped thread won’t fix it

I don't know on your bike, but aren't the bars hollow? Do they not have some sort of insert you can remove and replace?

So if for example it's an m6 size bolt I would need to buy an m6 helicoil kit rather than going a size down?

Tracy Tools are decent quality and good value, I have no connection other than being a long-term customer.

They must weigh a fare bit if they're solid. Make sure you get the correct pitch for your bolt, M6x?.

I've led a sheltered life, can honestly say I've never seen a set of solid bars .

Actually having a quick Google reveals that there are actually inserts in there. I'll take another look but does anyone know if they are threaded on a 1998 Suzuki?

I have a 95 RF900 which has anodised purple tat bar ends that I’m going to replace. On my bike the bars have a threaded insert that the bar end bolt screw in to.

just found this, it looks like a compressed rubber bung that expands inside the bar. Don't know if yours is the same. If so, has the nut fallen off yours?

Would buying a second hand clip on off of ebay or somewhere not be the easiest option?

It will almost certainly be an M6x1mm although you can never tell with the Japanese spin

Likely just a short plug, not a completely solid bar.

Triumphs are the same.

It's a solid piece of metal with a screw hole for the bar in it. I guess it might be a threaded insert. Will take a pic tomorrow.

May well do this if I can't get the inserts out.
