I popped out to buy a newspaper from the local mini-Tesco's thingie, this morning and the bloke in front of me in the queue was buying 150 quid's worth of lottery scratch cards. When he left the till I said to the lady, "blimey, what a waste" to which she replied "he's in here at least once a week". On exiting the shop I saw the chap a few feet from the door scratching away at his cards. With a grin on my face I said, "any luck mate?", at which he burst into tears and walked away!

I mentioned it to my missus when I got home, to which she said the following four words "Care in the community".

And what did she say about the man with the scratchcards?

She said, scratch cards - a far better investment than some crappy piece of crystalware!

A bloke like that used to go into a social club that I frequented. On a Friday he'd put all his wages into the fruit machine and then tip it on it's side when he lost everything.

It never ceases to amaze me how much money people piss away in alcohol on most nights as well, then have the gall to criticise me for having no life because I dont think blowing all my cash on overpriced drinks everynight is a good way to spend my time and money.

I largely agree. I tend to buy and collect a lot of stuff, but then I don't spend tons on boozing. No ciriticism of those that do, but I got out of the habit if it years ago (due to driving) and have never missed it.

I also don't gamble or play the lottery.

I do, however, have a games room and bar at home with pinballs, juke box, arcade games, video projector, pool table and other pub machines.

So a night down the pub for me and the mates often just involves coming over to mine...

I get the same thing! People treat £100 nights out as a 'norm' and me being flash buying 'nice' cars (which I can only afford because I don;t drink/smoke etc). Funny old world

I've been thinking about the genuine damage that my excessive drinking's done to me over the years at university, and it's a very real consideration that I'll have to avoid 'piss-ups' in future.

Call me dull if you like, but it's really not that much fun. If I drink lots of spirits, I fall over a lot and people laugh at me, and there's no chance of getting laid. If I drink lots of beer, my stomach turns into a high-pressure Spacehopper and I disappear to the toilet to fart and belch thunderously every hour, again, no chance of getting laid. If I drink lots of wine, my mates disown me.

In short, excessive alcohol is rapidly becoming a waste of my money. Unfortunately, I don't quite know any social scenes that don't involve excessive drinking.

Being a student really is boring now. Thankfully I've only got ten days of it left.

Welcome to the world of the grown-ups.

I was exactly the same when I was a student - but you get to the point where the "attraction" of a hangover really outways the "attraction" of getting plastered and spending the rest of the night shouting at God on the ceramic telephone.

The scratch card junky, usually a weak willed person who has come to the conclusion that the only way for them to be "successful" is to win a large sum of money through pure luck, rather than hard work. Desperation at this knowledge causes them to put every pound of their benefits into this short-sighted get rich quick scheme, hence your tragic friend at the tesco checkout....

Yeah, I guess I'm trying to avoid the situation I found myself in a couple of years ago, where the solution to absolutely everything seemed to be 'have a beer'. Split up with girlfriend = probably medically-speaking an alcoholic for a month. Nasty.

I just hope everyone else matures at the same time. I am actually getting a bit tired of going into bars with people who ridicule me for buying something that isn't the cheapest thing there, and drinking it slower than them.

I knew a bloke whose wife worked in a post office. She related this story to me.

Once a week the same young man would come into the post office, open his pay packet, and spend everything except the change on lottery tickets.

Once she asked him if he was sure he wanted to spend his money this way.

He answered that he'd once got three numbers right and won ten pounds, he just had to keep working on the other three numbers...

Sad muppet.

A sad probability is that even if these losers did win the lottery they'd probably be broke again in a year.

The internet is bringing ways to waste money to new heights. I heard on the radio of a man behind those annoying pop up gambling ads that appear on some websites. Apparently he's made 750 million in just a few years!!!!!!. I also know someone who spent 2K on pay per view porn in just five weeks. Then his wife found out.

Maybe we should all set up lotteries/gambling/porn sites and pack in the day jobs!

University sports teams. I rest my case.

TBH it's OK back home, but I just don't like drinking to get drunk any more, which seems to entail force-feeding yourself with the cheapest stuff you can get your hands on. Nasty.

Quite frankly, people who ridicule others because of their choice of drink are as shallow as is possible.

When I was at college, years ago, I'd sometimes go out drinking with other students. They'd all be chucking back lagers and spirits, while I sipped on red wine.

Nowadays, I find that I can't beat a nice bottle of red wine in the garden, watching the kids play, while feeding on a tuna salad. It beats getting sozzled in a smoky bar full of foul mouthed chavs talking about how crappy their football team is.

Very clever - the Govt give him £150 in benefits and he hands it straight back.
