This might have come up before, if so I apologise. The subject has been raised in The Independent letters column and it has happened to me, too. Apparently a smoothly dressed Italian man in a car stops men in supermarket carparks and offers them a free Armani suit that he's just been exhibiting at a local store but that he doesn't want to pay excess baggage on when he goes home to Italy. No-one I have heard of, me included, took him up on the offer so I don't what he's up to. Any ideas?

I've been stopped by Valentino men twice. They usually look and sound the part - very smooth handsome Italian types. Anyway both of them said they'd been showing samples to Harvey Nicks and wanted rid of them before they got to the airport.

I was quite interested the first time until I saw the goods - clearly cheap leather jackets with a Valentino label inside. I suggested to the second bloke that he engage one of his five reverse gears sharpish as I had no intention of being ripped off by a greasy thieving wop.

Sounds like the cheap watch scam in motorway services car parks. Just a way of getting gullible people to part with their money for cheap/fake inferior goods.

Chap in the business next to me bought some gear from a smooth talking Italian. He was horrified to see later that his "designer goatskin jacket" had never been near a goat and was actually made of plastic/nylon and stank of petrochemicals.
Said chap is only 18 or so, but has learned a valuable lesson!

Had it happen with wathces for 2 years or so in a servie station near Brum. Whenever I would drive back to London from Carlisle, the same guy in a black Mercedes would tell me the same story. Just been exhibiting at the NEC, want's to get some money by selling on the samples. Each time it was a different make.

He showed me the watch, warranty, certificate etc. All looked good, then asked for £100, when I said I didn't have £100 he said:

"How much do you have?"

"£50"

Then: "50's fine" I polietly declined. He never remembered me, even though I was in the same car each time (grey and black mini).
