Got to wonder how scroates rate a car in terms of being easy to break into, and what the potential gains could be.

Last night, in a fairly dark car park outside our cadet hut with 30 or so people inside it, there were a number of cars parked up:

Chimaera (roof off)
Disco
Nova
Astra
Vectra
Punto
Vectra Estate
Audi A3

At the end of the night, we came outside to find that one of the cars had been broken into. Lock stoved in and knackered, inside a state, and a briefcase missing off the back seat. Which car? The Punto!

My Astra had a laptop in the boot, the Audi had one on the back seat, and the Vectra Estate had one on the passenger seat, but there's no sign of any damage on any of the others at all, just the Punto, and nothing else was taken.

Question is, what makes it an easy target? All cars were locked, so why pick on that one, when there were better 'goods' on offer?

Of course, chance of catching the theiving scum? Erm, nil.....

was this a meeting of the "I'm a numpty so I'll leave a laptop on full display in my car in a dark car park and then complain about increasing car crime statistics club" ?.........

Or are they just trying to keep Madcop in a job ?

Thats the thing - owners of said motors with things on display in the front of the car etc quite shocked on understanding what could have happened, in a numptyish kind of way - "could that happen? Wow, good point, aren't I lucky!" or words to that effect. It's not a particularly nice area anyway, hence always putting mine in the boot out of sight, but in light of the other things there, they went for a briefcase with nothing in it other than students notes...

Cadet hut?

What as in "Space Cadets"?

Mind you to be a thieving shitfer you don't necessarily need brains. Plus 8 was parked outside the house some weeks ago, doors were unlocked (would rather they used them than went through the hood) and the tossers still ripped the sidescreen off. Oh yeah there was nothing whatsoever in there.

Barstewards.

I think you have to try to put yourself in the frame of mind of one of these scumbags. Quite simply they are going to target the car that is going to be the easiest to break into and cause the least amount of hassle for them.

Breaking into any of the other cars you mentioned would only risk an alarm going off so it's a higher risk. They want to be 'in and out', as it were, as easily and as quickly as possible.

The fact that someone had left a briefcase in plain sight and that it was a car with little or no real security provided all the reasons that they needed to 'have a go'.

Mindless - do they get a kick out of it? If not, i'd surely assist in that area

Air Training Corps actually though, but even I wonder sometimes! Keeps me out of mischief, alledgedly....

perhaps the perp was run over by a punto as a child, and just wanted retribution?

Sure, you'll know where it is, but not if it's on fire

It might have been another student desperate to catch up with his term work.

I was going to fit a Tracker until my insurance company told me they'd put my premium up if I did!! Apparently the implication is that if you have a Tracker fitted, it must mean the car's worth stealing...

WTF??
The usual line is "we won't insure you unless you get a tracker".

A mate of mine recently bought a Chim - turned up at our housewarming party in it ("How long have you had the TVR?" "About 30 minutes" Class! ) but had it stolen a couple of weeks later. He'd dropped it off for a service early in the morning and done exactly what the garage asked, i.e. posted the keys through their letter box & some scroat had fished them out and made off with the car. Anyway, to cut a long story short, he called Tracker, who told him that they wouldn't trace the car 'cos the previous owner hadn't paid the subscrption. So he paid up for the lifetime membership there & then and had the car back unmolested the next day.

That's what I was hoping for - but no. It'll add a couple of hundred pounds to the premium if (when) I do. These guys get you coming and going.

But Shirley they know what the car is before they start the quote. And know statistically how nickable it is. And how expensive to repair. And where you live. So how should reducing the chance that the car will be the subject of a total loss claim lead to an increased premium?

As I've posted elsewhere, they're all thieving ba$tards!
