washington red skins - name change ?
Discussion
I see this thread is going exactly the way I expected on PH.
Perhaps some native Americans could start up a football team called the "Cherokee Capital City Genocidal Slave Traders and Owners", see how whitey likes that.
Of course they should change the name. f
king hell. It's always been disrespectful to the native population, which the colonists have treated with such murderous contempt.

Just wait till they have a go at Chess, with all that white privilege.
I follow a chess channel on YT (Agadmator if anybody is interested) and he recently had a podcast where he was talking to GM Hikaru Nakamura taken down mid broadcast for no obvious reason - it was as controversial as you’d imagine a discussion about chess would be. One of the theories about the reason was that the YT algorithm would’ve detected lots of chat about “white is better than black “ and “white is crushing black” and decided there was some hate speech going on.
More seriously, I reckon Native Americans have got a lot to be pissed off about so I wouldn’t be telling them how they should or shouldn’t feel about this.
This is not new, it has been under discussion for several years and I believe that most of the media have referred to them simply as Washington for some time
Surely the Atlanta Braves should be looking at the same though, unless Braves is not considered to be derogatory in the same way that Redskins could be construed

I might be part of the problem......
but can anyone explain why the red skins name needs to be changed - it is considered a slur ?
why would any team use a derogatory term as part of its name ?
<flame suit on>
September 25th 1863, a newspaper article offered $200 for anyone who killed and scalped a Native American and sent - their 'Redskins' to purgatory. but can anyone explain why the red skins name needs to be changed - it is considered a slur ?

In 1898, the term 'redskin' entered the dictionary - which even then stated it was "contemptuous". 35 years later, in 1933 George Marshall changed the name of his football team from Braves to Redskins.
In 1937, Marshall's wife writes the original lyrics to 'Hail to the Redskins' which included the lyric 'Scalp Em, Swamp um'
In 1961, the Washington Redskins (under direct pressure from JFK) become the last NFL team to integrated, when Marshall signed their first African American player - Ernie Davis, Heisman Trophy recipient, who they traded 10 days later.

They could rename it the Trumptown Orangeskins or the rumplestitskins for all I care, this stuff is getting utterly out of hand, it indicates a mass mental issue to me.
It is getting to the point where you might think in 20 years time they’ll discover that there was a preservative used in the manufacture of vegan smoothies which sent you bonkersA bit like the correlation between the elimination of leaded petrol and a drop in violent crime

Ah look some facts, context and history. But no this is just PC gone mad or it's all down to vegans and their smoothies. You can view the announcement here - http://digital.olivesoftware.com/olive/apa/winona/...

Man wears a shirt copying the Redskins one, but with "Caucasians" and an image of a white man. didn't go down too well...

I'm not a massive fan of the hysterical "rename everything under the sun, just in case!" brigade, but to be fair, I can see why they'd want to change it.
I can understand that the fact that that name's been with the club for a number of years, club history, etc. gets trumped by "remember all that murdering you did, then named your baseball club after all the people you murdered? We're a bit upset about that."

The US carried out genocide against the Native Americans. So, using one of the tribe’s names plus a cartoon brown face figurehead hasn’t really ever been acceptable.
But on the other hand, Native Americans had been carrying out genocide against each other for...well ever. Just reading Empire of the summer moon, I thought it was really interesting that the Apache went to the state troops in Texas for protection against the Comanche that they had just lost a war against and were being literally wiped out by.
