Yes that's right, 8 years ago I thought I'd lost my iPod - a classic 160Gb model. I bought it end of July 2012, and put it in a leather case the day it arrived. And life was good. Briefly. I believed it lost when I went to Silverstone for a PH Sunday Service (Ferrari racing day) in September. Thinking I had packed it, I could not find it in my rucksack when I wanted to pull it out while I was waiting for the lunch break to end. My bag was mysteriously opened when I stepped off the shuttle bus, so I thought it had fallen out. All I had was the earphones. I was gutted. I never could find it again.

Fast forward 8 years to the weekend just gone, where I was working through a mountain of old lever-arch folders full of university notes (scanning them ahead of recycling them), when I discovered a big lump mysteriously wedged in-between some pages of a big heavy binder. It's the iPod! Unmarked, undamaged. How it got there - not a clue. How I never noticed it given that folder has been subject to relocation of property at least 3 times in the last few years - not a clue. I even placed in a box for moving less than 2 years ago.

I had previously discarded the box and leads etc. so I had no charge cable to hand. Cue everyone's favourite auction site. I dare not turn it on - fully expecting the battery to be in a deep state of discharge, my hopes are not high for it working. I will have another search for the box mind, clearly my memory is not what I thought!

A few days pass, and today the cable arrives. I draw breath and plug it in.

For a moment, nothing happens.

Then - there it is, the Apple logo. Could it be? It fires right up - it works! wobble

8 years of slumber and it's back to life. After a few minutes I unplug the charge cable, to find a surprisingly healthy amount of battery life, maybe 15-20%. Remarkable. I check the date on it - it thinks it's 23 May, 2012. Probably the default date as I didn't have it then.

So I plan to wipe the music I no longer want on there, and then store it for another 8 years and see what the value is then..!

I really expected it to be dead, I can't believe any device these days would survive so long without charge - but do tell me otherwise.

I will continue to rescue my jaw from the floor.

It's an Apple device. They're more expensive than their competitors because they are built to last. I've posted this before, but it's not unusual to see people using 10 year plus old Macs.

Have a look on eBay at Mac Pro base units from over 10 years ago, and the value they hold. It's all down to build quality, and 'you get what you pay for'.

Yes, but the last 10 years PC users have bought three machines for the same money & aren't stuck with ten year old hardware.

It's sat doing nothing for 8 years, nothing to do with Apple quality at all, purely luck that the battery still holds charge!

I very much doubt that, picked this up off eBay after someone had taken the initial depreciation hit

Sorry, which part is the Apple magic part exactly? The one where you were able to turn the device on after charging it for few minutes after years of it being stashed away, almost mummified? That's pretty normal for any electronic device.

There’s quite a big modding community for Mac Pro’s, depending what version you have (1,1 2,1 3,1 4,1 or 5,1) will depend what it can get hacked to.

I’ve got a 2006 1,1 flashed to 2,1 spec with an updated graphics card that’ll run El Capitan but it’s supposed to only go to Lion. That along with a SSD means that for startup and general web browsing it’s just as fast as my Touchbar Macbook.

Watch the videos first

You'll need a metal-capable graphics card - the RX 580 is the same as offered in the current Mac Pro and can be bought Mac-flashed from MacVidCards

Or not, I'm typing this on a PC I bought in 2009. Not had a penny spent on it in 11 years other than whatever Microsoft wanted to upgrade it to W10. It's still absolutely fine.

For balance I also have an second gen iPod Nano, it would have been bought in 2007 I'd think. It never gets any use, but whenever I've checked if it still works, it's charged fine.

I have a 120gb Classic too, they are like cockroaches, they last forever.
I was amazed they still go for £100 on Marketplace.

I'm a Linux user, but I've still got an iPod touch gen 2 somewhere, its useless, none of the apps are current, most of them say "please upgrade" but then it wont let you because the OS is far too old.

Will dig it out and see if can get ££ for it.

I'm not a Mac user or a Mac fan, but the hardware engineering is far ahead of any competitor. Software is more subjective, but the software support for devices is again far longer than any competitor.

If a non-tech person asks me what phone to buy I'd have no hesitation in saying just get an iPhone.

What's going on today, was UK hit by a cloud of Apple's magic dust?
