Looking for some personal experience of towing with either:

VW Tiguan - Manual - 4 Motion - 2500kg Tow Limit
Audi Q5 - Manual - 2400kg Tow Limit

I am looking to tow a Car Trailer and Race car, combined weight will be 2000kg (Which will hopefully have 70-100kg removed at some point)

As for vehicle weights, I'm fed up sifting through the internet for an exact model weight, they seem vary from 1600kg to 1800kg for the tiguan and 1770kg-1895kg for the Q5. The Q5 does have a 200mm wheelbase length advantage.

Thanks

if the towcar is less than the total load towed you are limited in speed iirc

There's no law saying anything like that. IIRC it's a recommendation from some caravan club or other.

Of course speed limits when towing are lower anyway.

I won't be in a mad rush to get anywhere when towing. If the weathers horrible I'll drop my speed to match the conditions.

My main concern is I don't want to the tail wagging the dog. As the car will only be about the same weight as the trailer once loaded up.

I've heard the Tiguan is pretty planted when towing, I just wouldn't like the idea of having to catch the trailer wiggling around fairly regularly while sitting on the motorway at 55-60mph. That would get tiring quickly!

Im assuming because you mentioned Tiguan as well you're looking at 2.0tdi? Would you not be a better looking at a Q5 3.0tdi? I cant imagine a 2.0 will have the guts in it to pull a car & trailer so you'll be wringing its neck all the time

Aren’t race cars meant to be light? 350 -400 kgs for a trailer, surely a race car will be lighter than 1600 kgs? A 2 ltr should be fine towing. Obviously more is usually better.

As well as the towing weight limit, also check the max nose weight.

Too little on the nose and you’ll be wagging.....

A 3.0d will be more suited to towing duties so a 3.0d Q5/X3/EX/QX50 budget dependent of course.
