Golf Mark 4 - issues to look out for
Discussion
I'm seriously toying with the idea of a banger for my daily use and I prefer the VW Golf mk 4 despite folks telling me to go for the Ford Focus Mk1
Im looking for an petrol and manual preferably 1.6 or 1.4 and YOM 2002/03
What do I need to look out for when checking out a Golf with the above specs, also what are the peculiarities of this car?
As for price what is a decent price for one ,I'm of course not bothered about mileage due it age but just need one thats not been hacked
I really like MK4 Golfs, really really like them, in fact still own one.
But I would avoid the 1.4 and 1.6 16v engines fitted to them like the plague, they can be very problematic. Same for the 2.0 petrols. If you want a reliable 1.4 or 1.6 petrol, get a Focus or a Civic !
If insurance allows and you have to have a petrol, get a 1.8 or 1.8 turbo. But the overall best engine in the Mk4 is the 130hp PD TDI.

Thank you Colin for the quick response,I did not know the petrol engines were troublesome,I have never owned a diesel car so far so im a bit wary of getting one thoughBut I would avoid the 1.4 and 1.6 16v engines fitted to them like the plague, they can be very problematic. Avoid the 1.4's, the engine is too puny for the weight of the car, a lot of them wore the piston rings out before 80k as the engine had so much work to do. There's not many 1.4's around now anyway. I don't think the 1.6's are too bad but the 1.8 20v turbo GTI would be my choice.
The market is flooded with them so you should get a bargain. Having said that, the mk1 focus is a better car than it's got any right to be. ST170's are quite cheap......
