A cousin's son cycled the west coast route from Alaska to Mexico with friends for, ostensibly, charity. He was an IT bloke, working on games.

When their journey ended, he cycled back, stating that he found time to think for the first time in his life, doing a slower, and less glamorous, Tod Stiles impression by stopping at various locations, doing odd jobs. He got sponsorship from a cycle manufacturer.

He then made his way, via various countries, to Australia. He got a work permit, a job with sponsorship for his needs, and eventually ended up in a school for kids with learning difficulties. He also taught adults, presumably in tech stuff. He was well-educated, with a Masters. After spending around 20 years being a bum, he returned to the UK. He was married with two young kids. He joined the family firm - dad was a millionaire, having started a high-tec company.

He reckons cycling is the only way to travel, but didn't cycle home from Oz I expect.

Pah. Ed Pratt is where it’s at. Set off at 18 from Somerset and unicycled round the world.

I can see the method in his madness. Fewer punctures.

Would the rolling resistance be reduced by half or less than that due to the increased load on a single tyre?

I always liked this story of a guy who cycled from India to Sweden via Afghanistan following a tourist trail to reunite with a woman he fell in love with:

In 2020 he'd be a creepy stalker illegal immigrant and would be shot or arrested en route. laugh
