Or potentially something else?

I think I'm slimmed it down to these two though. I did think that I was only going to go for the 1 series but I saw a V40 with quite low mileage.
The Volvo can be better miles / newer reg for the same price as a slightly older BMW, of which the 2013 revision seems to be the one I want. Never had a Volvo or BMW but I see the 1 series everywhere so it must be fairly good and good to get parts?

So long as the build quality is better than my Ford, but then that car is nearing 20 years old so I'm not too surprised it shakes and what fee you.

I quite like the difference in dashboard of the volvo though.

It's on a £6000 - £7000 budget but really more towards the £6k.

May be able to take a Volvo out for a test drive on Thursday.

Any thoughts?

i did 120,000 miles in a D2 V40 as a company car and my wife had a 1 series at the time

i'd pick the volvo every time

more reliable (nothing went wrong on mine in 5 years)
nicer seats (much nicer seats)
bonkers on fuel in 1.6 diesel trim
i think it's better looking than the equivalent 1 series, especially in R Design
drives really nicely

things that could be better

ate rear brakes but they were cheap
windscreen washers are the old style jets rather than fan which means every time you wash the car you need to adjust the jets again

Volvo for me. V40 is really nice.

And then there's a BMW. with the lovely N47 engine. Tick tock, tick tock.

But the Volvo seats...... cloud9

Volvo cam belt needs changing on time.

Replacement fan style washers are available for most cars.

Been in a friend's D2 R Design Pro and really like how it looks and goes.
The BMW is more common which is a positive for parts and availability on the used market however for me the image of the 1 series is a problem. No offence intended but its puts me off what I am sure is a fantastic drivers car.
So +1 for the V40. My only complaint with the V40 is the rarity of petrol autos...you will have to pay a premium for those Vs the diesel autos which are slightly more plentiful.
