Looking for a car for new job approx 20miles each way (motorway). Not sure if this is worth considering a diesel?

Looking to spend max 10k

Requirements
- something torquey as only motorway commute
- four or two door ( do not need four useable seats)
- fairly reliable (or not outarageous servicing costs)

Currently shortlisted Golf GTD/Audi A3 but aware more or less the same car. Anything I'm missing?

Wouldn’t say a diesel was worth it for that.

Focus Ecoboost 182, either Zetec S or Titanium.

A diesel isn’t worth it. Iv got a diesel A3 for a longer commute. Nice enough car but boring and dull.

20 miles x 2 journeys a day x 5 days x 47 weeks working a year (roughly) is 9400...

You could reduce your budget and get a slightly older BMW 330d. They are great on a motorway.

Facelift 2015+ F31 BMW 320d Touring efficient dynamics. Will hit 60mpg + on the motorway, and has all the toys. If you’re doing 10k miles pa commuting, say another 5k miles pa personal, so 15k miles pa total - a diesel makes sense.

My mistake I just did it as 40 miles for the year (brain fade) but I'd still say a diesel will be the pick.

What is your current car and why is it unsuitable for a 20mile drive?

Do you need a new car to do significantly better mpg than your existing car, I'm trying to figure if this is one of those times where you are proposing to spend £10k to get a car that does better Mpg but costs a lot more in depreciation... Or do you just fancy a new car?

The majority of modern turbo petrol cars will always be into the 30s nearer to 40mpg on a motorway so I'd still rather look at Golf GTIs than TDIs
