Oil pressure problem
Discussion
Hi all,
I went out in the 350 this afternoon. All went well until.......
Whilst driving the car into the garage I thought that the low-pressure light came on.
I let it cool then started it the low-pressure light did in fact stay on and the pressure gauge reads zero. I turned off immediately.
There is oil on the dipstick. The oil and filter were changed a week or so ago and has been driven without issues on numerous occasions since.
What is the likelihood of both sensors giving up at the same time?
Or will it likely be oil pump issues?
Not being all that familiar at the moment with V8's, any thoughts words of wisdom would be very much appreciated.
Many thanks

Hi I used 20W-50 oil.
It was originally fitted with a FRAM 2821A I was going to replace like for like, but none were in stock so was advised that this was an equivalent it was Bosch 0451 203 194.

I was wondering if the filter had failed?

Ok the oil is fine not sure about the Bosch filter but I would use these FRAM’s for a pre SERP engine

As the light and oil pressure gauge are not working 2 things jump to mind. First check connection on the sensors. Next with the coil king lead off and a external oil pressure gauge connected check the pressure on spinning the engine on the starter any pressure?

Wire wise the gauges work when grounded.
I don't have an external gauge to try i don't think. I will have to have a mooch through the old kit car stuff.
I will take the oil filter off to see if it has obviously gone bad.
At the same time I will see if oil is being passed out of the remote oil adapter whilst cranking the engine.
If not i will remove the distributor to see if the drive is in one piece.
Failing all that I guess it will be sump off to have a look at the pickup.
The drained out oil a couple of weeks back was really dirty and had probably not been touched in a long time.
The dipstick oil is so clean it is hard to see it against the marks.
Thanks Ray

So I small amount of time spent today.
Disconnected pipes and removed the remote oil filter, cranked the engine no oil out of pipes. Wonder if the bypass is stuck open?
No nasty silver residue in the oil filter oil must be a good signish.
Come to think of it, thought it was strange at the time but there was no oil loss when the old filter was removed at the oil change.
Next, I guess onto the distributor to see if the drive is intact.
Keep plugging away one by one.

now you said that if the bypass spring snaps then the valve maybe be open i would pull that out and make sure the spring is ok and the plunger is free to move in the housing, there is an up rated spring kit available somewhere. It may in the past have had a blocked filter and the bypass may have open in that case and never quite sat back correctly.
Hi yes, it was primed.
And it was OK for a couple of weeks after.
Anyhow the intention was to drive it for the summer...sadly not now. Then get the engine refreshed, as it has a couple of oil leaks and was a little tapety, when hot.
Looks like I will have to bring this forward.
I do have a garage, but very little space around the car to start taking engines out.
Does anyone know of an engine builder in the Harlow Essex area, that could take the car away to get the engine rebuilt, without breaking the bank?
Cheers

Yes very unlikely for both sensors to fail simultaneously.
The bypass in the oil pump sounds like a likely cause.
It's not too difficult to pull is out, without disturbing the pump.
Another possibility is the drive down to the pump which takes off the dizzy drive, when you pull the dizzy out your will see the keyed end of it down the hole. If the keying has snapped it won't rotate.

Ok greasy/oily fingers today....
Oil pressure relief valve seems OK with free movement and the spring seems to be intact with pressure against the retaining nut, I assume that this is correct? or should the plunger be further up the bore, as I had to struggle to compress the spring whilst engaging the retaining nut?
As I have no reference point, I guess the spring stuck out some 10-15mm past the casing.
I removed the distributor. The oil pump drive is intact as Is the dizzy mating half.
Made an adapter, whizzing over the pump with a drill does not raise the oil pressure and does not extinguish the low-pressure light.
I then removed the oil filter from the remote adapter. Whizzing the pump has flow out of the non-threaded hole. From memory that is correct flow outside return down the centre of the oil filter.
Replacing the oil filter and removing the right-hand hose from the remote adapter, and whizzing the pump has oil flow, so I assume that oil is flowing through the filter. I will need to crack off the other end of the hose (oil pump connection), to see if the oil is flowing through the hose completely (lost the scared of everything assistant to watch to see what is happening). So will have to look at that at another time.
So a few more daft questions....
Is the oil pressure relief valve fully seated? I begin to think not as the spring protrudes.
What are the chances of oil blockage somewhere after the flow out of the oil filter? assuming the piston is seated.
Is it worth trying another oil filter?
Many thanks for your inputs so far and patience.
I have had many classic and kit cars over the years with loads of oil changes but nothing like this.

I would take another look at the bypass valve it should come out with the spring shoot some brake cleaner up there or blow it out to dislodge any crap behind it then refit it. The pump can be helped by packing it with Vaseline Get a new filter fill it up with oil before you put it on and prime again.
As suggested a couple of times, took another look at the pressure relief valve.
It must have been as suggested, still lightly open, as the threaded cap was a whole bunch easier to locate the first thread. However, I think a new full assembly will be required. The piston showed slight scoring, I removed this to a nice shine
Oil pressure off the drill now. But do not have confidence in it at all.
I would like to extend a very big thanks for all the advice offered.
Just need to reset the dizzy correctly and timing....The next adventure :-)
Many thanks

Hi yes have been looking at them.
Will see how the recent work goes.
If it sticks again I will look at doing that.
I read that the internal seat needs machining to suit.

Hi don't think so as oil pressure back now. As I had the pressure relief valve out, I assume it was that.
I haven't driven it yet though I am awaiting another oil filter.
Thanks for your thoughts though that would have been my next and probably last thing to look have had a look
at.
