I've been a member on here for quite some time and posted quite a bit (but not as much as some!).

Today my father received a package from one of the members on here, completely unsolicited and it was a massive surprise for him. It came about after I posted an old photo of my dad taken in the 60's when he was in the Navy. It was only a bit of fun and yet one member from here has brought tears to my parent's eyes through a random act of kindness.

I don't know how to begin to repay such a wonderful gesture, maybe I could do something for someone on here? A kind of pay it forward. Just think how much we could achieve as a community if we all paid one random act of kindness.

SD.

I don't think this will be a very long thread, but I'm glad you and your Dad found some good will.

I recently asked someone for some advice and help with not much expectation of success. I was surprised when they contacted me to tell me that they had enjoyed some good fortune and felt they should share it. They decided they would help me.

As a result I have made a similar promise to myself. I'm not yet in the position to pass on the help to the next person but I'm going to try as soon as I get the opportunity. A kind of positive chain letter ifywim. There's no doubt it creates a very positive feeling. I occasionally step out of character and do something nice and unexpected for someone and it is amazing. I have this suitcase full of old car mags from the sixties and one of my builders was talking about his birthday in that decade. I fished out something like Popular Mechanics Jan 1962 and gave it to him and he was absolutely chuffed and then so was I.

He hasn't given me anything back though. frownwink

What a great story, OP.

I was helped out by a PHer a few years ago. Some good people on here. Hopefully one day I'll get to pay it forward.

Agreed, there are some real gems on here, and I always try and 'pay back' the kindness I have received.

A year ago a holiday company (rhymes with Hong Kong Phooey) tried to switch me to worse accommodation and charge me over a £1000 for the privilege. Posted on PH and JonnyJustice helped out, within 24 hrs accommodation sorted and £500 goodwill payment.

The 'virtual pub' that is PH is pretty good when it wants to be....

I was particularly touched when a PH'er needed flowers putting on his relatives grave - he couldn't get there due to lockdown, so a local PH'er did it. I liked that.

I've helped out a few with free lawnmowers, a rare watch box.... if I can help, I do.

I would also add that for some, maybe facing loneliness after a divorce or whatever, this place is good to check in to - not for support necessarily, but just a chat.

This site got me through my HNC in Electrical and Mechanical Engineering. I will always be grateful for this and have tried to help others where i can with job offers, interview prep, once went for a beer with someone and showed them around Japan as there on business while i was there and even the odd old playstation game.

There are some good’uns and i have still recieved more than I’ve given

What about the guy who was struggling to keep his debt repayments month by month, a really kind PH’er sent him £20k-£30k to clear his debt and from what I remember there was no repayment agreement made.

That to me is UNREAL!

It's comforting to know that there are people here who are on the kind hearted end of Human decency.

Shame that a lot of other internet forums aren't.

Having received messages of support from members after family bereavements and health problems it does show that there are good people all around us ,we just need to be brave enough to ask for help .
We tend not to show too much compassion for fear of it being interpreted as some sort weakness .
It does feel good to do good things for others ,although I have an image of being grumpy ( hence the Monica) I do try to do at least one kind thing each day .

I have sent odd car parts that i had spare to PHers in the past for free , ive had bits sent to me too . I was also offered free use of a barge by a PHer when my divorce went pear shaped and i was homeless. I didnt need it in the end but was deeply moved by the offer from a total stranger.

Im always think when reading posts ‘can i make a difference here’ and if i can i do.

This is something i have experienced on other car forums too but no where else on the internet.

I needed something bespoke making up and a PHer did it for the cost of a bottle of Vodka (which due to personal circumstances I was delayed in sending out)

Another time, I discovered that something I said, unintentionally and unbeknownst to me helped somebody out in a mental capacity and it helped him get a more positive outlook on life - Am still friends with him on Facebook and he's happy smile

I, personally, have had some positive vibes and feedback from people on here which is something that is nice from as wide a group as this - I even count that thread in all this hehe

Great thread smile

I've been on the receiving end of great kindness and generosity from PH'ers, and like another poster above, if I read a post and I think I can properly help, I will.

Beyond the arguments & animosity, there are some right awesome people on here, and that's one of the things that keeps me coming back to PH. I do admit I sometimes have to remind myself that PH is, on the whole, better than the many petty arguments.

I was going through a rough patch a few years back, posting about dieting on the health section. Clearly in hindsight I was very underweight and on a bad path.

One of the posters took the time to PM me and have a chat to see if I was okay. A small gesture sure, but very kind. Was one of the things, amongst others, that helped snap me out of it.

I try to think about my replies to threads to see if I can be as helpful as others have been to me, I've had a lot of good advice on here, both motoring wise and in my personal/professional life.

I asked a PH member to send me the Mercedes dealer history for a car I'd recently bought after seeing it mentioned in a post.

24 hours later he mailed me the .pdf

Nothing in it for him and we've obviously never met.

A nice chap indeed.
