looking for a 8 port gigabit switch that can be powered via POE rather than a plug in unit. (mounting a switch in either the airing cupboard or loft with no power supply.

any suggestions?

I'm not sure if it exists, but you might find a standard switch runs off 12v, in which case you can buy active PoE splitters which take the 48v in from the ethernet cable and give you a DC connector output.

Something like this: https://www.amazon.co.uk/ethernet-Splitter-Adapter...

Your problem might be if you need PoE downstream of the switch, as it couldn't be an injector

Netgear have one:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/NETGEAR-GS108Tv2-Gigabit-...

Although you lose a port because one of the eight is the POE uplink.

The reviews say this one can run off the POE in port:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Ubiquiti-US-8-Managed-Des...

There are a few five port options:

You can actually daisy chain two PoE devices with the right equipment . I have a Ubiquiti 8 port switch which is PoE powered and provides a powered downstream port. The limitation is that the switch needs to draw at the higher output 25w 802.at in order to power itself whilst providing only a 15w 802.af downstream port but this still allows to you power a switch and an access point off a single PoE link.
