987.2 vs 991.1 (With a Few Overseas Factors Thrown In)
Discussion
Hello everyone
Ideally for my budget I’d like a 997.1 C2S/C4S manual with all the IMS and bore scoring issues sorted (if money were no object I wouldn’t be looking at 997.1’s)
However I now live In Kuala Lumpur and more or less everyone I’ve spoken to here hasn’t even heard of An IMS or Bore scoring which puts me off a 997.1 as I’d always worry even tho I understand only a small number of cars are affected ...no local Hartech equivalent As far as I know to help me sort it .... would love a 997.2 but they’re out of budget at around £55k for the cheapest ...cheapest 991 is much more At around £80-85k
Also, any 997.1 I get would Probably be Tiptronic as I haven’t seen a single manual Porsche for sale here (apart from GT Cars) and am beginning to believe they don’t exist in the local market (for reasonable money anyway)... had a 997.1 turbo in the past and whist I loved the addictive torque, I Didn’t enjoy the Tiptronic (each time their own I’m sure some like it) , and with the power of a NA 997 being more at the upper end, I suspect I’d like the tip even less in a 997 S.... love the PDK in the 991 which would be my choice for a daily but they’re way out of budget as mentioned above
That brings me to my next option, a 987.2 PDK With the 2.9..... sorted engine issues and I won’t worry about bore scoring and IMS issues etc..... I’ve always loved the idea of a mid engined Porsche. Never ever driven a Cayman but spent quite a bit of time between front and mid engined Ferraris in a previous job and just love the mid engine feel .... At the same time l love the shape of the 911, and everytime I see one I can’t stop looking
So I guess I may have answered all of my own questions, but if any of you were in my situation with no local specialists to sort out an early 997 and only being able to get a tip, would you go for the 997.1 tiptronic or a 987.2 2.9 PDK... oh plus £335 to tax a 2.9 vs £1090 for a 3.8 annually
Thanks in advance
- title should say 987.1 vs 997.1 but I can’t seem to edit it**

The 987.2 is the safer option. However if the 997.1 is what you are really after ( would suggest driving both as they are very different) there are ways to de-risk a 997.1. Firstly get it inspected if you can by an expert including a check of the bores. I know you said manuals were rare but they are less prone to bore score as is the 3.6 allegedly. You can fit a third radiator and a low temp thermostat to reduce risk of scored bores. Model year 2006 Onwards fitted the larger IMS bearing which reduces the risk of failure. You can use the chassis number and check on line if a particular car has the larger bearing fitted. Drive both first. Good luck both are great cars
