Yesterday I bought my first ever VW & so far it's been a pure delight.

It may not be a GTI but coming from a Smart Forfour, 150bhp makes it feel like a damn missile.

The MPG is also great and I'm still finding new features on it.

I'll be carrying out some light/medium modifications to it over the next few months (it's a Vdub, it's illegal not to modify it, right?) and will start with an easy one tomorrow.

Finally nice to be back in a car that I'm happy to take pictures of!

Good choice. The first VW and the smallest engined car I’ve ever had, but not the smallest fun-other vehicle is an XC70...

What mods are planned?

If I ever have to replace my 9n, will probably get a 6r.

Needs to have xenons. Responds well to a remap!

This is the 3rd smallest engine I've ever had (second, if you count my my Corsa & Forfour as just one cause they were basically the same engine) but my first turbo petrol so pretty pumped about that. Also in terms of power to weight ratio it's definitely one of the best I've owned. And a remap is on the horizon which will most likely make it the best for that.

Couple of small things first like removing the model & trim badges from the rear (plan on doing that tomorrow actually), replacing the VW badges with black ones, tinting the rear and side windows.

Then eventually some more technical things like lowering it slightly to get rid of those gaps. Definitely a Revo stage 1 remap which takes it to 200ps & I sent an email this morning to Cobra to ask them if their stainless steel exhaust kit will fit mine. It should do but their site says the kit is for 2010-2014 models so just wanted to make sure.

And so begins learning all the nicknames for models before I have any idea what people are talking about, I knew it was a Mk5, does 6r refer to a specific kind of Mk5 Polo or is just something else to call them other than Mk5?

Haven't looked into xenons, do they make the car look better as well as giving better light?

Yeah the Revo remap is something I'll be looking into very soon.

I like these, I looked at these a few years ago on our company car scheme because they were nippy and cheap (ie I could have got happy with the option list). It’s a good little engine in these.

Could be that's what this was, given the VW leasing floor mats hehe

So first "mod" today, removed those pesky badges from the rear.

Had the car just over a week now, loving it so far, getting 40mpg average with my 14 urban miles a day journey & though it's not super loud or sporty I am liking the exhaust noise.

Haven't done much to it since my last post, except got rid of those awful GB plates, replaced the faulty N/S indicator lamp & had all the little dents taken out. Also got it a properly wash today.

Got a black front badge arriving in the post soon, getting a quote for tinting the windows tomorrow and once that's done I've also got an MCM decal arriving in the post because I love those two maaaad blokes. Also getting a new key coded on Tuesday but that's not that interesting.

I'm still convinced this is the best angle of the car:

Been a while but finally got some (sort of) worthy updates.

After doing 14 miles of 99% urban driving 5/6 days a week, over the past two months, I'm getting an average of 42.5mpg which I pretty pleased with. It's a tad lower than my last car but at least in this one I can overtake bicyclists going uphill thumbup

Last month the outer shell on the centre wheel cap on the N/S/R wheel fell off after I got the car washed. I noticed it a few hours later & it genuinely looked like someone had just replaced the centre cap with one that had corroded to hell. I went back to the people that washed it and asked them & one of them said the cover fell off whilst washing it and he picked it up from the floor around the wash bay and handed it to me, great customer service there rolleyes There was no way the cover could be fitted back onto the cap so I had to get a new one. A new one cost just over £12 directly from VW but luckily they did sell them individually rather than in packs of 4.

I got the door & rear windows tinted to give a bit of an aesthetic improvement, hard to tell unless you compare before & after photos but hey, I like it:

I replaced the dated looking halogen DRL bulbs with LEDs & I think they look MUCH better:

& yes, the front badge is slightly off centre in that last pic which brings me onto my next change, I finally found a black front badge that actually fits! It was genuinely my 3rd attempt after getting one that didn't quite (my fault) & an online store sending me the wrong badge (their fault) but it was the same store that finally supplied one that fits & personally I think looks great (& yes this next picture doesn't show that the badge is straight but I took this one today & am really happy with how it came out biggrin):

The last small change I made was today, after two months of waiting my MCM sticker finally arrived! I think those mad blokes are great & now wear their badge with pride! biglaugh

This is it now for a while. I've got some scratches on the body & marks on the wheels I want to take care of soonish but the more interesting stuff (set of new Goodyears/Michelins & a Revo remap) is going to have to wait for a while considering the pounding my wallets been taking lately. But all round I'm pretty chuffed with the car & it's really made me understand people's fondness for the brand as a whole. Already setting a Golf R as my next car in the next few years if things all go to plan, but the world doesn't really seem to be following any kind of plan these days rolleyes

Have a 2017 Polo GT and a 2018 Polo SE in my household and the new model is massive when they are sitting side by side.

The 2017 was valued are only 2500 less than it was bought for with 15k miles. I mean that's not even £850 a year in depreciation.

I think these look smart, especially 3dr in that blue.

I nearly bought one a few years back but they were strong money, I went with a Leon FR diesel in the end.

Yeah I've been noticing Polos more and more now, as you usually do when you're looking to get/have just bought different car, and those Mk6 are pretty hench. Have to say I prefer the lamps on the Mk5 but I'm pretty biased sooooo thumbup

That's good to hear about how well they hold their value, I always thought VWs were a tad overpriced so I guess that would go hand in hand with it.

I've yet to see another car sporting one in the wild yet, got my eyes open.

Cheers thumbup Aesthetically I'm pretty much done. I'd still like get the rear lowered a bit but the difference it makes to the cost of the insurance just isn't worth it rolleyes The only thing I'll do now is place a Revo badge on the rear once the remap is done.

The colour (especially the body and wheel combo) is usually the first thing everyone says they really like about the car so I think I got lucky with this one.

Hopefully if I take care of it enough the value won't be too drastically lower then when I bought it. I only do around 4,500 miles a year and don't like using cheap service parts so that's my part in keeping the value up done.

I don't really visit this site anymore & since I've not done much else to the car worth mentioning I didn't see this comment.

Unfortunately the remap's been put on hold due a combination of myself being put on furlough for about 1/3 of the year so far, an EML coming on & the N/S/F tyre losing pressure regularly. All those things are now sorted but the remap itself is somewhere in the £700 region and will literally double my insurance cost so as of now I'm not really in much of a hurry to get it done.

The EML/EPC lights were caused by a very common issue with the turbo actuator seizing. Luckily I have an ex VW tech where I work and he managed to sort it. Was a bit hit and miss because he (and also VW themselves) said it's likely the actuator would be far too seized to remove from the turbo and would require the whole turbo replacing. Luckily it didn't, so instead of costing £1,200 for the turbo alone, it only cost me £200 for the actuator and 2 boxes of beer to cover the labour cost thumbup The tyre was a lot more straightforward, small split in the side wall so just slapped a new one on. The labour for that was a couple of Cadbury creme eggs.

I was meant to be going away on holiday in June but that looks unlikely so a combination of summer weather and holiday cash at my disposal might make me book it in with the local Revo specialists but I'm not entirely sure yet. If it does happen I'll be sure to post about it thumbup

I really rate these Polos. My girlfriend had one in the same colour and also a three door (seem a lot rarer in three door) albeit with the 1.2 tsi engine. Great cars which feel very solid with a great sound system.

My only criticisms were the rubbish seats which had you sitting quite high and offered no lateral support.

Does the blue GT have better seats? What engine do they use?

I've only seen two others since getting it in June last year, a 5 door in the same colour I drive past on my commute to work and another one a couple months ago which I think was another 5door.

It is a pretty solid all rounder & the sound system is notably good despite not being anything special like Harman/Kardon or w/e.

I think the seats are unique to the BlueGT as they're coloured to match the car and are quite comfortable, I don't have any pictures of the seats, just the dash and steering wheel.

It's got a 1.4 TSI with active cylinder management which is a neat little fuel saving feature.
