This car has been around 6-7 years of waiting for me. I’ve been ready to buy one several times, and something more important has always taken precedent.
The plan is that this will be the last car I ever buy.
It’s a 2001 on an X reg. Facelift model but without the (little bit more) expensive tax.

I put out a feeler online enquiring about M5’s for sale in the near future. A guy messaged me that he had one for sale and it was like pulling blood out of a stone to get information from him.
He sent some really crappy images and it was hard to make out what the condition was like.
It’s had the same owner for the last 16 years and he informed me that it has always been garaged for those years.
I decided it was worth the gamble of driving from Penzance to Nottingham for.

Anyway long story short I bought the car, stopped off at an M power specialist in Bristol on the way home, and now I’ve got a long list of things to do to get it to how I want it to be.

Here’s some pictures parked outside the hotel in Nottingham

Mostly maintenance that comes with a 20 year old BMW.
There was a lot of play in one of the ball joints when it had its Inspection.
So rather than just replace that one arm, I’m going to give the whole suspension a refresh.
I’ve put a deposit on a set of H&S backboxes, essentially a fancier looking muffler delete. Mental how quiet it is for a big V8
There’s a few common leaks to sort and brake lines etc. then mostly cosmetic things I want to do;
Wheels refurbed
Get the wheel trimmed

It already has an AP big brake kit and AC Schnitzer short shift so they were things I was planing to do when I bought one, albeit I was going to use the e60 short shifter

I've had 2 of these, both in carbon black, but viewed a couple of Silverstone cars as well.

Nice car op, looks a good one (I hope).

Lovely.

I have a massive soft spot for the E39 M5, it’s just aged so well and is a really well proportioned car.

Agree decree plates, they’re nasty but at least it doesn’t sound like there are too many issues.

Great car, OP. I had one and easily the best saloon I've owned. H&S boxes are awesome, I had a set on mine. Silent until under load.

Cracking looking car, E39 M5 owner here too.
If this was the last car I could ever buy, I would have no regrets!
Please let me know if you’re willing to let go of your standard back boxes. I’d be interested in having them.

Here’s a few pictures from the Inspection II that I had done in July, just after collecting the car.
The pollen filters were dated 2005! So that’s pretty gross

Shame they are 3.5 hours away from me, otherwise the car would be visiting them a lot more often.

Going to get all the inspections done by them though driving

Those exhausts are going to sound superb!

Get some decent 4K video clips up when you can so we can all hear them in their glory and then voice our jealousy winklaughbiggrin
