718 spyder allocation
Discussion
Hi all, Long time lurker, been offered an allocation for the spyder, which I put in a letter of intent last year, not heard a thing ( obviously Co I’d) till yesterday when my opc rings and say they have an allocation for November, ( got to give them answer in morning) problem I’ve got is I bought a Boxster s 2015,27k miles and pretty well loaded with spec I like, 5 weeks ago, they will obviously take mine part ex, but is a spyder worth 50k ( finance mostly) to change not driven one but love the Boxster, am I likely to regret turning down the allocation, thanks in advance for your views especially spyder owners
If you’ve got the disposable to manage the payments and enough buffer to weather the uncertainty… do it.
Else, enjoy what you have.… that fact that you won’t have the burden of 50k of finance will allow you to enjoy it and use it all the more.
You can always pick up a lightly used Spyder in the future at a discount, where the first owner has taken the hit.

Strange as it sounds when I ran my 981 Spyder as a 100% daily, I did not have the roof down much as it is a pain when you are using it often , ie nipping to the shops, mates, pub etc, so I think I used mine roof up 95% of the time, where my 987 I use 99% roof down.
So if you like the ease of the roof and like driving roof down, you may want to look at the GTS 718 instead, or keep what you have.
Spyders are special, but the roof still is annoying on any model, more so on newer cars as you cannot open the boot ! In fact I would go as far as saying the roof is s
t on the modern Spyder's as it's the normal roof but now with 2 tails and manual, which just seems pointless as it offers nothing to the model now, On the old car it’s a feature and adds a lot to the car, on the new models it’s a hassle pain in the arse.
Spyder owner’s normally know they want one, so asking on a forum, imo you don't really want one.
Don’t let the “hard to get” aspect sway your car choice.

Out of interest (and as I’m sure many others would be interested) whereabouts is your OPC? I’ve been, shall we say, expressing interest with 4 northern dealers for a couple of years without getting anywhere. I sort of hope you’re not in my area, as, if you are, then that would then infer I’m not as special as I’d like to think!

Interesting dilemma.
I’ve got a 718 Spyder and a Cayman R. I’ve had lots of “caysters” as well.
In my mind it comes down to your expectations of the Spyder. I think it’s arguably the best sports car that Porsche makes at the moment. Long gearing aside it’s a brilliant drive, looks fantastic, quite old school in feel and response but with all the mod cons. In a word it’s a very classy car.
I am not that fussed about the exhaust note, yes it’s a bit pants but if you need to pop and bang everywhere to enhance your perceived manhood then you had better buy something else. It’s just not that sort of car.
What it isn’t in my book is a Porsche GT car. It’s just too dumbed down in its responses, too heavy, overgeared, too quiet, not alive enough. But that is just fine for what it is.
£50K more than your Boxster? Only you can decide but for me yes definitely.

Owned my 718 Spyder since March and 2500 miles. Amazing car and better than my 918 GT4 in all ways but one; the sound. I tried to love it but have swapped back to a 991.2 and much happier. I’d take a 918 GT4 over the 718 everyday of the week, based on sound alone. If you are not fussed on that single aspect then it is an amazing, fast, capable, car with a sublime chassis. For me the lack of sound was a terminal problem. Roof was also a pain compared to automated but have gone back to tin top anyway as didn’t find it added as much as I expected. Enjoy whatever you decide, both will be excellent cars and it’s about what you do with it!
One of the best looking cars Porsche makes at the moment,
The £50k premium, comes from having a much rarer car, brand new versus 5 years old and more performance.
Unlike GT4, I've not heard of allocations popping up, so if you change your mind you will be able to pass on your build slot at little or no cost, (assuming we don't have another covid wave or you spec bizarrely).
