Is there anything better for the money than a Jazz

We will shortly be moving house and will need a second car to ferry the kids around. Not doing many miles more then 5000 a year I reckon as we'll use the 3 series estate for heavy lugging and long distance.
Budget is 1500 max, petrol with 5 doors. Looking around for reliability it seems the Honda Jazz seems to be the best option at the minute but wondering if I'm missing anything else off the list?

My missus bought a Jazz, on recommendation from her dad having one years ago and doing well.
Hers unfortunately hasn't. She bought it 2 years ago for a grand, and has spent more than that repairing it.
Gearbox went, window switches have failed, CAT needed replacing, O2 sensors died... does have a good ol' big boot for the kids things though
We're going to be upgrading to a Golf soon.

Yes, great cars very practical and great to drive, my gf has an 04 one that cost a grand.
With one big proviso: their gearbox bearings go; it will manifest itself as a vibration/buzzing noise usually in a low gear. It'll be fairly easy to hear and gets progressively worse if you leave it. Google the sound on YouTube for what to listen for.
When we were looking for one a year ago, most of the cars for around your budget had this issue. The one we bought had it and they agreed to fix it as part of the deal. I was expecting it to break soon after bit over a year in and all is well.....
Other than that, the headlight plastic goes cloudy but you can sort that with a drill and a headlight restoration kit and the rear light seals and hatch can leak a bit but they're pretty bulletproof in the main.

Carlos thanks so much for the heads up on the gearbox issue! Did you find out how much it costs to get repaired? Did the garage you bought yours from ever tell you how much it was? Looking at 06/07 plate cars and wondering if the face-lift ones still have this issue?

My mum has had a 56 plate one for about 11 years. Nothing spent on it apart from tyres, and a new cat converter (scroats nicked it)
Cracking car, love stealing it for tip runs they fit loads inside with the folding seats etc
I’m actually excited because she is after a change now and said I can have it. Don’t need it, but they are such fun to drive. Like driving a go kart sometimes.

The auto variant of the Jazz looks v slow based on the specs. However wife likes the Jazz due to its small size but insists it must be an auto. Given I am coming from what feels like a fairly nippy 1.8 MK1 focus (113 bhp manual), would a automatic Jazz with 100bhp feel painfully slow?
As well as the gearbox mentioned, older Jazz's have issues with the a/c compressor and condensor (condensor could happen on any older car). Also water leaks into the boot as the C-post to roof seals fail - look for signs of water in the spare wheel well. Rear disc brakes have hardly any force so the discs rust and the pads / calipers stick. Rear wheel bearings seem to regularly go and I think they have to bought as a hib assembly so are quite expensive.
If you want an auto avoid the iShift automated manual which was used from mk2 intro in 2009 until about mid 2011.
I've driven the CVT auto and it seemed perfectly adequate. I don't think the CVT has a great reputation for long-life though.

t automated manual system for a few years …. That's an acquired taste, The CVT are not fast but still nippy (with noise),I've bought 3.
The first new in 2002 which I put 66K on in 2.5 years then sold to my sis in law who gave it to my brother. Made it to 130K miles and 2017. It did latterly have the gearbox issue which Honda chipped in to fix. Also had an ABS issue but other than that it was consumables.
2011 I bought a Mk2 which I only kept for a few months due to circumstances. Felt bloated and underpowered compared to the Mk 1.
3 years ago we needed a car our elderly GSD could get in and out of and bought another Jazz. Bought one that an elderly couple had owned from new with full Honda service history (for what it was worth as I doubt the air filter had ever been changed) with 65K on the clock. It was filthy inside and out and had been standing for a few months.
Paid £1200 and gave it a thorough clean a service. As set of new tyres and an exhaust is all its had in 15K miles.
I had 2 full size filing cabinets in my first one and they have great carrying capacity, versatility (4 adults and 2 dogs? No problem!)
The MK1's are more fun to drive as they have fewer extras and therefore lighter. Good fun if you keep the throttle nailed and will still give you 40 mpg. And if you drive with a light right foot you can better 50mpg.
As a utility car you can't really beat it.
