I have had three 911s in the past and Been thinking hard about a 991GT3 but the PDK puts me off - hard core manual guy at heart! Plus dont really need all the speed on offer....

997GT3 getting a bit long in the tooth now and many have 6/7 or more owners etc. So been looking at 718 GT4/Spyder but having called lots of OPCs there seems virtually zero chance of getting a new one - paying overs to buy someone else’s spec has zero appeal.

Brings me back to a 981 Spyder, I enjoy an open top car etc so would tick many boxes for me re touring etc. But, they are just so expensive still! Looking at 5 year old OPC cars still virtually at list. Just goes against the grain in many ways for me! Would it be daft buying a nicely specd car for mid £60s? Will they take a hit at some stage or just continue their current glacially slow downward trajectory?

I recently picked up a 981 Spyder and payed overs, but it used to belong to a pistonheads member and had the spec that I wanted.
I believe that older cars will hold and possibly rise in value. Why, beacause newer cars are being "dumbed" down. 981 Spyder is worth it for the sound alone and buckets seats are holding the premiums.

I was that PHer and I also paid overs for it when I bought it! Honestly OP if you focus more on what you’re getting for your buck rather than whether it’s overs it’s still so much car for the money. Re: 718’s: a Spyder may be difficult to get an allocation for but by the sounds of things if you wanted a GT4, calling round OPCs you might be able to find a slot.

ETA: I’m presuming on 991 GT3 you mean 991.1 because 991.2 obviously manual was an option.

Have spoken to probably half a dozen dealers now and response for new GT4 ranges from “we’ve been allocated 3 and have 6 guys already waiting to the usual build a relationship with us over many years before we would allow you to buy such a special car BS“.

So the first hand experience so far is - a new one ain’t happening annoyingly.

Yea aware of 991:2 manual, just can’t afford £125K, lol.

981 Spyders are awesome cars and you will not regret getting hold of one...
I’ve a 997 Turbo in the garage too and the Spyder
is a lot more fun to drive...
It is a classic for sure.

You need to ask yourself what you want from the car.

Some of these cars are very over rated imo, but do make nice lifestyle cars.

I see you asking about other cars, pm me if you like as some i own or have owned.

Agreed. This is all you need to do. Just be honest with yourself.… do not buy because of forum chatter or trends… unless you have a very large wallet… you’ll always be chasing and never enjoying. Just another version of the rat race… do not enter… be straight with yourself.

Can't comment on the prices, but I love mine and probably also paid too much for it - don't care.

The Porsche game with the dealers is daft, and I hope things change in time. I also casually inquired about a 718 spyder when I took mine in for a service in March - no chance I was told. There has been some degree of softening though as I have been offered a GT4 slot (presumably someone dropped out), but it's not what I want. Usually I quite like changing cars but I can't actually think of anything for similar money that I would prefer, or indeed any new-ish or current Porsche that I would go for in preference.

Go and drive one and make you're own mind up, but most folk seem to quite like their 981 spyders!

The thing to remember about a Spyder if you test drive one is that the roof is an utter pain to put up and down. Something a short test drive doesn’t tell one. I thought it was annoying but I could live with it, but it really got on my nerves very quickly. I’m sure if you just do a Sunday drive once a week on a sunny day it would be fine, but As an example I used to take it to work and could never be bothered putting the roof down when I’d just need to put it back on 20 minutes later.

Apart from that the 981 is a good road car. Far better suited to our roads than a GT4. Noise is great, although the fake burbles on overrun are a bit annoying.

I am in the opposite dilemma. Love the 981 spyder. Noise drama and great road manners. But would love shorter gears. Pdk will help but noise gone , handling better Is it worth £25K to change 982. Tried an exige. Great car. Great handling. Impressed but need to be under 80kg and 5’10. Brakes great and light car.
Never owned a Porsche before and in such a dilemma. The drama of the engine in 981 is fantastic without pse.
What to do. Asked to sell it but not sure. ???

I have owned my 981 spyder since new. 4 and a half years.
Is a super car and over and above anything it makes you feel good. A bit of x factor.
I am easily pleased and would probably say the same about a boxster t!
So paying 60-70 k on a 4 years old low miles car is ok imo. The car was too cheap when new by 10k.....

Don't think that the Spyder was ever intended as a daily.

This video really captures the crazy exhaust note which is about as subtle as a train crash.

981 Spyder destined to be a classic, purely based on the sound!

I’ve owned the 987 Spyder, 981 Spyder and the 718 Spyder.... I kept the 981 Spyder and have done since 2016!

If you drove all three back to back i’d be surprised if you didn’t pick the 981 Spyder.

Strange to see this posted just after me... I tried to buy this car a few years ago, was owned by a different PHer then who decided to keep it rather than sell it at the time. Absolute beauty and had I known he was looking to sell again I’d have probably tried to buy it again. Enjoy, it’s an amazing spec.

Thought I would just add, I liked that car so much I did my best to recreate it with my 718 beer
