Is there a technique to getting reverse "nicely" ?

Haven't managed it yet in No.29 with the box that came with the ex cerb 4.2...or is there summit wrong ?

Thoughts/suggestions.

Thanks

G.

I find putting it into fifth, then straight back into reverse usually works well.

its a streight cut box i think so to stop it mooving a forward gear must be selected first then reverse, i was told 1 st with other compotition boxes but check manual.

Is it? I had a SC box in my old Mini and that made a hell of a lot of noise, in all gears.

You bunch of young whipper snappers. It changes gear like a non syncromesh. It does this in all gears (despite the fact it actually does have syncromesh)

So change gear and select reverse like your grandfather used to. The trick can be to wham it in fifth and then pull it back into reverse, but that is probably a contrubutory factor to fifth gear giving up the ghost, and although it always works it does so for the wrong reasons but shunting the geartrain.

Instead try heading toward reverse and stopping the pull when you feel a slight amount of resistance. Then very slowly let your foot off the clutch while keeping a slight pull on the gearlever. You will feel a gentle cluck as the teeth turn and the car slips into reverse. Too much engine and a crunch of gears, too much pull and a crucnh of gears.

I find it easiest to blip the throttle prior to engaging a forward gear, then again before engaging reverse!

isn't it recommended to alternate which forward gear you use, so that you don't kill one particular gear?(unless you use Julian64's advanced method of course!)

I don't have a manual....didn't think to ask the guy who was just selling the engine/box.

SC...no, its a std Cerb box....all normal helical with synchros....the other that came with the car has a SC 5th, which is actually the only difference between a Challenge race car box and a Cerb box....those were the rules.

Thanks for your suggestions guys...I'll have a go at them.

My 96 owners handbook tells you to select 5th gear first, if that helps.

Who needs reverse, just spin it round.

hi rich, that was my advice to the guy doing a 3 point turn around the roundabout in the high street lastnight,
my young mucca got to know the diferance between front wheel and rear wheel drive,
front turn steering to right ti go right,
rear wheel, turn to the left to go round fast right,
he still hasnt worked that one out yet.

Well it appears that goin for 5th, with the clutch pedal down of course b4 reverse, is just the ticket...luvvvveeeerrrrrrlllllyyyyy....no whinning, grinding etc.

I must admit the noise did give more to the credence factor of the ex race car image but that didn't help with my longer term relaibility viewpoint.

Haven't tried others yet...quite happy with whats workin @ the mo thanks.
