I used to get my garlic from a local artisan bread maker who also sold nice quality vegetables but gave up as there was too much waste...shame as they were good sized bulbs with juicy cloves.

Now I'am stuck with dross from the supermarket...I need good garlic any suggestions, smoked would be nice too.

Planning my quick trip across to the Isle of Whight for some supplies so thank you for the idea. i do have an elephant foot garlic growing in the greenhouse, but i'm not holding out as i am a beginner.

Also just discovered Toum, which is a delicous fluffy garlic sauce. Well not really a sauce its just garlic and oil, but soo yummy.

Most supermarkets sell crappy chinese garlic, that's neither juicy nor garlicky. I found that Polish shops will often sell very good garlic, mainly because it's European rather than Chinese.

This. , along with Garlic beer /ice cream/mayo/jam/various pickles
And try Vampires Revengeevil

Get lots , garlic can be frozen ,
just seperate cloves , do not peel , when thawed will look a bit watery but still firm ,and all flavour will still there,
Also you can get good garlic in markets in France , bit of a trip unless you happen to be there , as will we be in 2 weeks time

As mentioned, growing your own is very simple - garlic requires minimal attention. Plant them in tubs September through to December (depends on the type) and wait. In spring I add some fertiliser and top-up the tubs with fresh compost. Water as needed, more as they close to harvest so the bulbs can fatten up and occasional weed.

The last few years I purchased bulbs from SimplySeed

https://www.simplyseed.co.uk/garlic-bulbs.html

The Provence Wight has done very well this year, Solent Wight middling and Tuscany Wight has produced smaller bulbs. Once the cat gets off my knee, I'll go to the greenhouse to take a picture of the bulbs drying.

We finished our 2019 harvest of bulbs a few weeks ago, so we probably have one month a year where we need to buy garlic rather than use our own.

For curries / sauces butter, 'Taj' frozen crushed garlic is unbeatable in terms of convenience, and the flavour is pretty good too.

From the 'world food' part of the freezer section at Asda. 85p for a 400gram bag.

I've been using that for a while, so much easier than messing about.

I think Morrisons do is as well.

Fantastic lots of good info...thanks to all.

Some years back Lidl single clove (Solo) garlic it came in little woven baskets inside were around ten large round cloves, I used to roast them and fold the goodness into mashed potatoes which tasted amazing...they just up and removed them from stock no idea why..???

I would really like a source for that type of garlic.

I am lucky enough to live on the IOW and was over at the Garlic farm shop on Monday to stock up on fresh garlic and chutney ...... I highly recommend the roast garlic jam ..... they do two ...... one plain and one with chilli ..... both excellent ...... and their onion jam is also good.

There is hardly a day that goes by that I don't have garlic ......

Supermarket garlic often seems to be bruised, dry, and have large green stems growing through each clove.
Sainsbury's do extra large garlic heads and these are better than the standard ones, which are a waste of time.

Tesco do similar - I think they call it "chef garlic".

Their std stuff is hopeless.

Bit of a thread revival.

Also fed up with crap supermarket garlic, so I took the advice from this thread to grow our own. I really have no idea what to buy, so let's hope the Doocot and Patagonian Purple are decent garlic. I am no gardener, but it was fun shopping for all bits, and my daughter loved been my little helper. Fingers cross they actually grow!
