So I get out of the shower to see a missed call from a Unknown Number, and a voicemail message.

Voicemail " Hello this is ******* garage (the main dealer) OUr records show your car is now due for a service. Please get in touch to arrange an appointment"

I bought the car brand new from the group in October 2018. There was no choice but to buy brand new for the UpGTi. I have a two service VW package.

Me thinks: hmm funny, the dash indicator says 71 days or 2100 miles until service. And hello what's this, the yr one service was performed on 25th Sept 2019. (And they don;t stamp a logbook anymore, but I insisted on some sort of receipt)

So I ring the MDealer, and get put through to a centralised call centre, which puts me number 4 in the queue. So I hang up.
Next call: ring the MDealer on their local number, and it rings off, nobody answers. Yes, I'm ringing (no I'm not really) to make a booking for new business, and nobody answers. And yes I know it's coronavirus, but now's the time to resurrect a business.

So what the fk are you playing at VW, you think you can ring me whenever the fk you want and drum up some stting work by calling me in for service.? DO I look bd stupid? DO you not think I can fking remember something that happened 10 months ago and add on 12 months.

And then can you be bothered to answer the fking phone, or talk to me like a person. ??

By contrast, and beautifully to illustrate the problem with decentralised, automated and faceless big MDealer chains. I took my wife's car to my local garage (family owned) for its MOT earlier TODAY. And talked to the nice bloke who advised me of the work needed this year, even though it passed. And then I got home to see my VW has a flat tyre, so the local garage sent one of the lads to my house (admittedly 500m away) and took the wheel off to get it sorted. TODAY FFS!!!! just before the aforementioned shower and voicemail.

The MDealer chain is, I see in real trouble. According to national news. I won't name the chain. I despise them all. And every time I think "hey maybe I'm being too harsh, maybe I should be more considerate and give them a second ( not fking second, try ninth) chance, they confirm my belief and try and screw me over.

Wake the fk up. Treat your customers properly. If you ring me with a fking idiotic message, I will treat you like the fking idiots you are. It doesn't need saying that I won't be buying anymore service packages from the MDealer. This one was free with the purchase..

Rant over.

Self-assessment of rant : 4/10

My local VW dealer sent me a text message a few months ago stating their records showed that my car was now due a service. It didn't require one, so I ignored the message.

They've been centralising and de-skilling in all areas for yrs now.

It's about management control. Apparently.

You need to chill the fk out.
You were busy when they rang you, and they were busy when you rang them?

Christ, I thought I got disproportionately angry about things from time to time but this takes the biscuit.

I am not a doctor, but I think your diet may be lacking bran.

And they are all call centres now sadly, I am still getting MoT calls for an Audi I sold 2 years ago.

If it’s anything like my experience, you’d have to book in advance by about 71 days to stand a chance of getting a courtesy car. So, they could well have been doing you a favour, letting you plan in advance, get it in the diary and have transport sorted to make your day that bit easier. You could re-write your OP as one expressing gratitude to main dealer instead smile

Both my "kids" have jobs where they can't take calls during the working day - one in the NHS and the other is a teacher. Dealers really don't seem to be able to cope with this.

The NHS one has a Honda (dealer is part of a regional dealer group) and I had to resort to Facebooking the dealer sales manager to get someone to call her after a string of two-way voicemail messages.

Just the same with other daughter's SEAT - on its first service the dealer group call centre managed to book her car into a Fiat dealership in the NE (we live in the NW) and she then went through the back and forth voicemails before it got sorted. She booked it in online for this year and they still called her and went back and forth several times.

OTOH yesterday I booked my wife's VW into the dealer - I looked via the VW website and the first date if offered courtesy cars was mid-Sept. I emailed the service manager with a couple of dates at the end of Aug and he sorted it. Got a booking system email asking me to arrive at 9.45 - checked back with him as they're doing the cambelt etc and he wants the car at 8.15.

Don’t think this is just a vw problem. Have a 3.5 yr old 3 series and it took 2 weeks vehicle off road to replace auxiliary battery. Every phone call of which there was many! Starts with a warning of delays due to Covid 19. Pretty sure I could have replaced it in 45 mins and a trip to battery stockist.

Perrys Aylesbury are still emailing me reminders that my SEAT Altea needs servicing - despite the fact I sold it 5 years ago and have had two other SEATs since then, both of which were serviced by...Perrys Aylesbury.

Got mine yesterday - manual, not an auto as promised by the service manager.

It was OK though - I only ask for an auto so they won't give me an Up! I got a T-Cross which I've read is worse than the Polo it's based on but I thought it was OK.

Staff at the dealer thick as ever. Taking distancing very seriously so very little interaction. Another customer trying to have a row as he'd booked online, and had the confirmation with him, but the dealer had no record of it and the girl kept saying "you haven't booked with us" in an f-off kind of way!

Our car looked untouched - I don't know how they can do a cambelt and service and not leave the slightest disturbance in the dust on the engine cover and air filter housing. Maybe they do it all from underneath.
