I didn’t want to bump the previous thread, and couldn’t see another, so, Band of Brothers, Episode 5, Crossroads.
Caught this recently, and vaguely remembered it from the original series, it’s the one where Winters shoots the teenage SS soldier in a field in Holland, and later goes to Paris on leave.
The company were moving along the bottom of a dike, when they hear machine gun fire, they are surprised, as the German HQ is apparently 3 miles away, and Easy wonder why they hear fire giving a German position away.
After a fierce firefight, it’s revealed that the Germans were SS, but as far as I recall, the original machine gun fire was never explained.
I surmised that maybe the SS were shooting hostages, Jews, or POWs, but I don’t remember anyone explaining what they were actually doing there, anybody brighter than me know?

I’ll take that under advisement nicanary, but thanks.I’m no ballistics expert, but although that I’ve read that some WW2 m/guns had a range of circa 2000 meters, the Germans in that episode appeared not to be aiming at anywhere particular, if anything, just test firing the guns, just how I saw it, not necessarily that’s what they were doing.

I think Nicanary is correct. I think it was because they were young nervous soldiers, putting down suppressing fire at anything that moved. I can't imagine an experienced SS soldier giving away their position away so obviously, especially if there's Allied artillery in the area. The cross roads will definitely have been DF'd, as was clear when the German's shelled it later.

When the firing started, one trooper said to Winters, “MG42? What are they firing at, what’s down that road?”
Winters said, “Regimental Headquarters, but that’s 3 miles away, why reveal their position?”
I repeat, to me they didn’t appear to be aiming at anything in particular.
