I just had a message pop up from the 24th August.

What's that all about then?

I hope not. One of the reasons I bought my LG TV was because it had a NOW TV app.

Yep just had the same message on the works TV. Not sure if they’re stopping it on older Smart TV’s? I think this ones 6/7 years old. We also can’t get it to work on our 7 year old Samsung

Try downloading the NowTV app and casting to the TV. That should work but if not, a Google Chromecast will be a low cost solution.

I had a client with a (then brand new) Samsung smart tv where the only app that worked was the BBC.

The problem AIUI is the platforms (computer architecture) vary even between different models of the same manufacturer and apps (different for each service) need debugging to run properly and it very often just doesn't happen. As said solution is a plug-in device that's popular as it'll be well supported.

Buy a TV for its picture quality not its smart functionality.

Seems fine on mine but it's a 2016/17-ish WebOS TV

That's a pain if it's all LG TVs. Bought an LG smart TV a couple of weeks ago. Had a roku on my old tv but the internet connection kept dropping on the Now TV app, to the point where it was virtually unwatchable, so it's been much better on the smart tv.

That's the one thing I don't like about technology nowadays - the manufacturer / software supplier's ability to turn the system off.

I have an old PS3 which is used for the odd bluray and streaming, including Now TV for the F1... until this season. I bought my pass, booted the PS3 up to be told Now TV is no longer supported.

I was brought up in a not too long ago time, where things were only disposed of when they no longer turned on, not when the manufacturer decides I should be replacing it.

The problem i found with this is that it is classed as 2 devices which is annoying, and then i've had it before it comes up and says you can only watch on 2 devices at one time. so if someone else is using it in a different room or wherever you can't do it.

The sticks are good though, on the new remotes , if the tv is compatible you can control the volume from the nowtv remote too

Smart TVs are a complete waste of time - they invariably either have a crap proprietary system that doesn't support all the popular services, or they ship with an Android TV that doesn't get version updates or bugfixes. Plus they often launch with underpowered CPU/GPU hardware which only gets more lacking over time. And I am absolutely thinking of Sony for both those previous criticisms.

I would much prefer it if manufacturers spent the money on getting the best possible display quality, stuck an extra HDMI input on and left it up to those who want the Smart features to get their own choice of device.

This - take that further and get rid of the speakers too. I just need the screen as everything else is external.

In their defense, it's a 15 odd year old platform that is no longer supported by the manufacturer!

They won't keep updating the firmware as they want you to buy a new telly. You're better off buying a stick or new Blu-ray player for £60 every few years.

In this case it’s not the manufacturer, it’s the content provider. But in any case, NowTV are/were offering a free tv stick to compensate. You may have got an email about it, you may have to get onto live chat and moan.

Glad it’s not just me who’s fed up with their Sony TV. Mine takes forever to do anything. Even if I ignore the smart apps, the thing is so slow to respond to any input. It also randomly stops communicating with my speakers which is fun. I wish I could just buy a dumb tv.
