Discussion
Hi mate,
I have a question, but it is only to settle an arguement so I understand if you are too busy to reply. I followed the link on your website to the RR graphs and I see that there is one for a 4.5 Cerb making 425bhp, but there is no spec write up for it. I was just wondering if you could tell me what the spec was?
Thanks
Mike

Cheers. Have you any idea roughly what the mods are?
I am having a 'discussion' with someone about TVR power figures and he has latched onto that as proof that Cerbs put out the power that TVR claim.
Mike
The 4.2's are usually not far off as standard however the 4.5's are about the same as the 4.2's as standard but have a bit more torque. Plus the 4.5's have a lot more upgrade potential to reach the quoted fiqures.
I beleive the straight 6's make their quoted power and in some cases a bit more.
Hope this helps
Paul

4,5 cerbs are nowhere near stated power UNLESS they have been chipped
Not quite Gaz some can be made to hit the magic 400+ with out the chip! You don't need to be spending £1000 plus on chipping and induction etc for these to do 400bhp either but you have good well looked after standard car to start with.
There are a few people out there that believe/know that the cars can make 450bhp like the tuscan racers and they dont have emeralds or major remapping.

Where have I been for the last 5 years - never heard this before in Cerb circles!?!?

Craig,
Are these 400-450bhp engines you mention tweaked or running NOS?
Ceejay
No NOS
The AJP V8 engines used in the Tuscan racing have been running 400 - 450bhp for a long time. The main difference is the breathing! Intakes and heads. The exhausts apparently only add a few horses and are the same overall size as what we all have.
My own car showed 403bhp (corrected) last year and I believe there have been a few standard others with 320bhp+ at the wheels SXS's for one! if the losses are to be 60-80(depending on who you talk to) then they are either 400bhp or close enough.
Didn't a red rose on here hit 439.?? which is what it should and it never had an emerald or remap OK it did go back to the factory for more work and a few quite mods but it still made the power and OK it wouldn't have been cheap. but it does prove that if a red rose can be pushed to what it should then the standard should be able to be pushed but maybe not to the 420bhp.
At the rr day we saw a standard 4.2 make 1bhp less than an emerald!

I would have thought that the Tuscan racers use different cams too to take advantage of the shorter intake plus the head mods. Now we're talking big money and for most only viable if the engine has had some sort of failure and is gonna be rebuilt. Interestingly the butterflies on the racers are the same size as the 4.5
I have heard of a RR car making 439bhp, obviously these have head work done, slightly higher compression would make sense, importantly the maps on these cars are much better than the generic 4.5 which are not great, so less gains to be made by re-mapping a RR car plus it's got a 98 map as standard. Generally they seem to produce approx 400 - 430 bhp.
On the Cerb RR day the best standard 4.2 made 359bhp, the worst 4.5 Emerald made 375bhp with a generic map. CarbonAl's 4.2 with Emerald made 360bhp. I know Joo won't fit Emeralds to 4.2 cars cos the gains do not represent good value for money and the standard maps aren't that bad anyway.
An Emerald on it's own gives about 390 ish bhp plus decent improvement in torque for about a grand on most 4.5 cars, add in the Joospeed induction kit will see about 400 - 405bhp for approx 2K outlay with engine still in the car. I reckon that's good value. Add a splash of NOS on demand and you're looking at 450 - 500...... mmmmm nice.

Does anyone know what rpm the peak power was reached at on the RR day? I realise that all the cars would have been slightly different, but on average, what sort of RPM were they being run up to?
Cheers
Mike
Generally peak power about 6k ish. Most rolling roads will stop the run when they see power dropping off.

Hi guys,
Thanks for all the replies and to jules for the email. Unfortunately it didn't help me to win the arguement.
Apparently Jules, Austec and all the other AJP specialists don't what they are talking about. TVR know the AJP better than anyone and they quote power at 420bhp. The reason that all of those cars tested at the RR day produced much lower figures is because they are all old and have significant carbon deposits which severely affect power. Also, they weren't revved high enough as TVR quote peak power for the 4.5 at 6750rpm. And of course, RRs are notoriously inaccurate.
In the face of such overwelming evidence as that, I gave up trying

Thanks again.
