Driving SORN'd car to a pre-booked MOT

When driving a car without MOT to get tested, does anyone know if the MOT appointment needs to be on the same day?

I have an MOT booked in for next week but would like to drop the car off at the garage this weekend - I'm struggling to find out if this would be remaining within the law or not.

It isn't, it's around 5
But it's what makes me ask the question - I know the distance isn't defined in the law, but is there a limitation to it having to be on the same day?

id ring the garage and explain ...worst case the filth will call the garage who can then confirm yes its booked in today , thats all they will do

As long as the test is pre-arranged, there's no problem at all dropping it off a few days early.

You might want to check that the garage can keep the vehicle off the road whilst it's in their possession, though.

Or the OP might drive past a DVLA camera, and have to explain to them the purpose of the journey when the fine paperwork drops on his doormat.

Don't park it on the street outside of the garage, and ask them not to do it either.

As an aside, I did pretty much that - bought a car which had been on SORN with no MOT or tax, picked it up about 9pm from Wakefield with an MOT booked for the next day, but in Northampton. I drove down that night, left it at the garage off the road, car passed MOT the next morning, and as I wasn't going to use it for a while, I took it back home and parked it off the road in the garage. Got a letter from DVLA about the car being snapped while unlicensed, wrote back explaining the situation and attached a copy of the MOT performed the day after the car had been snapped, and got a reply from DVLA saying that was fine. Wakefield to Northampton is well over 100 miles but the garage where the MOT was performed was only 3 miles from my home address. Given all that, I think the OP would be fine.

On a related note can you drive a SORN'd car to a prebooked MOT, pass it but then not tax the car till the start of the next month?

Yes - the regulations say 'to and from an MOT test'.

Yes, I did exactly that in my post above. If there's a camera, you get snapped and get a letter, just write back with the details. As you can see in the reply I received from DVLA, they were ok about it. Happy to send you a copy of my letter to DVLA if you PM me. I'm pretty sure I kept a copy of the Word file as well as a scan of the signed one so you can simply edit the necessary details.
