The engine has just imploded on my Griff 500
does anyone out there have or know someone who has a
spare 5litre pre-serp Rover V8?
Anyone?

What's up with it, exactly, Rita?

Bearing in mind the cost of a good second-hand 5 litre TVR engine, and the fact that a fair chunk of the time/expense involved will removing and reinstalling the engine, would it not be cheaper just to fix the damage on your existing lump?

The bits I really need are:
Front cover
Oil Pump
Oil Pump Gears
Camshaft & Followers
Crankshaft Bearings (Main & Ends)
Apparently a rocker pad went into the oil pump gears
and tried stripping everything
(that's what I've been told by Steve @ insane so don't try getting technical with me! I know nothing about cars other than I absolutely love my griff).

Nothing really scary there, just time and someone who knows how a RV8 goes together.

Did it sieze with the oil starvation?

If the journals of the crank are okay most other bits are not that expensive, certainly not new engine time as far as I can see.

Get the block pulled, look at all the tasty mods you can do - fast road cam, hi capacity oil pump etc etc, and take it as a plus.

The RV8 is agricultural even in it's 5ltr guise, that's teh joy of it.

Good luck finding someone you trust to rebuild it.

All of these parts are readily available and relatively cheap...certainly the cost of rebuilding the engine with these new components is going to be much less than buying a second-hand 5 litre.

All of them (apart from the front cover) are things that you would definitely NOT wish to source second had, though - you are asking for trouble if you don't fit new components.

I don't know what the waiting list is like at the moment, but I'm betting that unless the engine has seized as a result of oil starvation, you could get TVR Power to sort these components and get yourself a Taraka upgrade at the same time for similar or less cost than a second-hand engine of unknown history and condition. Why not give them a ring and explain the situation?

I'd ask for a quote to repair your engine and compare to the cost to renew. As stated above the parts listed are not that expensive. The cost to lift the engine out and in is the same but add it into both. If the oil pump has mangled bits and the bearings have disintegrated then you really need a full engine strip and rebuild to clean it and whilst you're at it... All in you might be looking at £2.5 to 3K for a rebuild and £4+K for a new engine. It seems to be a lot but for piece of mind and a guarantee a new engine may be worth it in the long run. Good luck 5LR, JR.

PS don't forget that for a new engine installation you will then be able to sell your old one for rebuild. Every bit helps.

I'd agree with Mutant Rat, by the time you've dealt with the bits and bob's, maybe having the upgrade done at the same time by the engines original builders is the way I'd be thinking.

Give Dom or Jamie a call at Power (02476 366177) to discuss your options re strandard/upgrade as you may find the upgrade not too much more than a standard rebuild (as was with ours).
There may be a waiting list which won't be good but there great blokes and the service is excellent.
