Years ago i had an EASYCAP usb device for getting video cassettes onto a computer.

Reading online it seems these are still available but people are having trouble with them on windows 10. My lappie also doesn't have a cd/dvd drive so getting software for any such device would have to be online or I would have to get it put onto usb stick, and they all seem to come with CD discs for the software.

So .. what are the favourite devices these days for getting old VHS stuff onto a new windows 10 laptop? Are there any plug and play devices which win10 recognises immediately ? Much of the info on the internet seems to be for older operating systems, or much of it is based around stuff in America.

Hoping someone on here has a solution. I have some old motor race footage on Video8 and numerous VHS cassettes of relatives weddings that family might like to see too. In all possibly 30 different cassettes to get on dvd .. getting a shop to do it would be expensive although probably the easiest route in reality.

any advice appreciated

Do you have a VHS machine already & what state is it in? I'd consider getting them done online as it can cost as little as £10 per tape (you can get quantity discounts).

Consider sending them a sample tape & see what the results are like - it's almost certain to be better than you can achieve.

I have made it work, but only after trying half a dozen drivers. I can't remember where I got the successful one from.

I would be interested to hear how you managed it, I have quite a few family videos on VHS, it would be great to get them in a digital format. I also have a few video recorders in the house. How did you link it up?

I tried it with an August USB TV tuner (windows 8.1) without any success? but now need a windows 10 solution.

Also, once all the family videos are digitised, I can get rid of the video recorders and tapes, making my life a little bit tidier bounce.

I was thinking of just linking up the video player to the TV and just recording it using a mobile phone, just to get a copy (admittedly a poor quality)

I used a borrowed USB EasyCap, tried multiple drivers, and used FFMPEG to do the conversion.
I'll try to find the final driver set later.

I'd get an RCA/composite to HDMI and work from there tbh.
You'd need some HDMI input but that's going to be a lot easier to source.
