Chief Constable of Northamptonshire Police is pleased his force has finally taken delivery of new response team vehicles. They've been given the tag, Interceptor.

Deputy Chief Constable of Diversity & Travellers takes exception to the term, as it's obviously white male privilege. Or something.

Are we close to peak woke insanity yet?

What the juddering fk?

I think she's reached peak bellend, has she never watched the TV show, as that regularly featured female officers as part of the Interceptor teams? i hadn't realised Interceptor was a male-only tag.

She must have sprained wrists from all that hand wringing. Although she hasn't mentioned the LGBT officers who possibly also make up the teams, what about them?

Agreed I had to check to see if there was something I was missing....

noun: a person or thing that intercepts.

Not seeing anything specifically male in that.

I just did exactly the same thing with the same result. I'm at a loss as to why 'interceptor' is in any way sexist? Completely genderless.

If I had to make a supposition, it's that in its original Latin form the '-or' ending makes it male - 'Interceptor' would be the male form, as opposed to the female 'Interceptrix' (as in 'Imperatrix', 'Aviatrix' and so on).

Except that, while the word has been carried into English with an unchanged spelling, the grammar hasn't gone with it and, despite its origins, it is entirely gender-neutral.

Do we know if that's really her job title?

And is there an explanation somewhere of why she thinks it's sexist?

There isn't!

I think she was at Uni studying Geography when this was on the tv. Perhaps she's got confused?
