Someone I know of that's pretty tight with Manthey was told iirc that they believe there are fewer than 1000 surviving cars today. Which I have to admit at the time I found a bit hard to believe but one has to assume that Manthey had good reason to believe that.

P.S the video was a little painful to watch personally...

Wow, so quite a big attrition rate ! Perhaps explains the new rubber which as at as I know is unusual.

I know what you mean about painful in style but had some info I found interesting...

Some of it was interesting to be fair yes. At least the guy ballpark got the weight right as mostly the weight quoted in magazines etc for the car is way off. I have to say though, am a little mystified about the comments about all the reviews saying the car was very very benign and easy to catch. I only remember the Clarkson Top Gear one where he was very clear part of the fun was the fact the car 'could kill you' in his usual bombastic style, although to be fair I don't remember even faintly that the likes of evo etc ever did mention the car was twitchy on the launch reviews either.

One thing I definitely do remember is that Walter Rohrl was quoted as saying when the car snaps out of line it can be quite tricky to catch and if he says that I'll certainly take his word for it! Which in all honesty is hardly a surprise, car with high power to weight, no electronics and very low polar moment of inertia being a bit tricky on the limit.... The old PS2 tyre definitely didn't help either as it was a bit of a dire one to drive on until properly warm so what the chap said about early reviews is quite curious.

Interesting video to watch and I too have mixed emotions over its content.
I think the tyre was and is the achilles heel.
The Michelin Pilot Sports are crap in my opinion.
Allowing the car to squirm and start to row up under hard acceleration.

Cup 2’s and a proper geo with some decent camber up front make it a very different car to the early days.

Cast my mind back to 2006 and the first track day I did on the original tyres, not enjoyable!

They really have come of age.

As I said at the start, it’s just a fun little video. Nothing to get gussets all twisted over of course smile

I think it proves the point that the most desirable Porsches are not the most perfect ones.

It was certainly the case that the 911 had an edgy desirability factor throughout its early life because not everyone 'got it', and there was a sense that you had to be a talented driver to master one.

Of course, nowadays, anyone can buy a contemporary 911 (992) and your granny could drive it safely. In many ways that has diluted the iconic heritage.

The potted history of the genesis of the V10 power plant was interesting. In many was, this is so very nearly a car (or at the very least powertrain) that never was.

The black one that came to top gear is the same reviewed by a german magazine drifting at every bend in a mountain. The cgt, and that one I assume it would be, is very sensitive to the torsion bar setup, so hard mounted on the rear and mid or soft in the front will cause what is called, snap oversteer. Maybe in the US and other journos got the red car that might had had another setup.

Besides rake how do you get camber at the front?

There are aluminium spacers between the upper wishbone and the tub. You won't get more that 2 degrees negative with them fitted. I had some machined down in thickness so we could get 3 degrees negative camber on the front.
