Hi All,

Newbie here who recently got a 2000 540i E39 blue beast. Unfortunately my right side wing mirror has cracked and the mirror adjustment motor broken though the electric folding still works. I tried contacting BMW and got quite a big quote for a new piece and that too with a delivery timeline of 3 months as this is not available anywhere in the UK. It's primarily because its auto dimming with electric folding and of course for an old model. I was thinking of the lines of getting a replacement motor and a used mirror from eBay. I'd prefer some professional to work on it though. Does anyone know any mechanics / body shops near London who might be able to help? I tried contacting some of the recommended workshops in Piston Heads. While they were helpful enough to offer to fit it for me, they weren't keen on helping me select the right mirror as there are quite a number of variations of these.

Sorry if I sound like a noob, but what would be the best way to take this forward?

Thanks

DIY job to change the gears over; if they're damaged. You'd be best to get those parts off eBay using www.realoem.com for your part numbers

If you go onto the website and input the last 7 digits of your VIN in to the box at the top of the page; it'll bring up your exact car smile

Re the glass and mirror cap; just buy them new and get the cap resprayed to match the colour and for the glass; just swap it out.

I've got the full powerfold/heated and chromatic (dimming) mirrors on my E39 530i Sport touring (Jap import); but I've just swapped both the glasses out as they're c£450 from BMW, EACH!

I used these FYI: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-7-SERIES-E38-5-SERI...

They're the same; left & right and are fully heated, but not auto dimming (that I can live without)

Swapping the mirrors on the car is easy; you just remove the door card; move the window trim up & out of the way and it's 3 Torx 50 bolts holding them in place (IIRC); just undo them and swap them over and then replace the trim & door card etc

If I can do it (I generally fix things with a 12lb sledgehammer) then anyone can winklaugh

Awesome. Thanks a lot for the reply. I wasn’t sure I could skip auto dimming mirrors as my mechanic kept saying only that would work as a replacement. Good to know. Thanks I’ll have a look at the page you mentioned. Appreciate your patience on this.
