Hello

I'm currently using a Samsung Galaxy J4+ which I bought in January 2019 for £150. It replaced my Samsung Galaxy Note 5 I'd had for 3 years and loved, only reason I replaced it was because I dropped it causing the screen to go completely black, with a repair cost of over £200. However the J4 is terrible!

I only use it for internet browsing, social media, youtube/twitch/catch-up TV, Autotrader etc (I don't have a life) which is why the guy in the 3 shop recommended the J4. However, I use it doing all that for hours and hours a day, and the J4 just doesn't have the processing power to cope without being incredibly slow. It won't even scroll through Twitter without jittering now! Videos are a nightmare to watch as they stick and freeze. It's always been slower than the Note (understandable really) but it's gotten worse over time because of updates etc. Evidently I bought the wrong phone for my needs as I was trying to save money and I'm now royally fed up with it.

Does anyone have suggestions on what phone to buy for around £600 (or less) which will last around the 3-4 years mark based on that usage. NO CONTRACTS!
Had androids and a windows phone, Apple is a contender but my IPad was terrible and I dont think Apple make a phone that cheap (no idea).

Only other criteria is a big screen, I was a semi-early adopter of "phablets" with a Note 3 many years ago and refuse to go back to anything smaller than the current J4+ screen size.

Definitely not having "budget creep" and spending £1000+ on the latest flagship, can't justify a months salary on a phone!

If you're considering the Samsung Note (10) range, perhaps hold off for a couple of weeks - the next one (expected to be the Note 20) seems due for announce in about a week and release/shipping a little after, at which point previous range might fall in price.

If you like the Apple ecosystem but not their prices you can pick up a second hand XS model with plenty of storage for your budget.

Got one a couple of months ago for my daughter and aside from the camera it’s virtually identical to my 11 Pro Max but less than half the price.

Moto G8 Plus. 6.2" £240

Seriously, you're unlikely to need anything more expensive.

Only downside for me is the usual bugbear of android system updates. Security updates come along fairly frequently, however.

iPhone XR looks like it’s just over £600 and would probably do what you want. A SE is cheaper and (probably) will be supported for 5 years, but doesn’t have the big screen.

Otherwise, there’s a massive range of android phones with midrange snapdragon CPUs and big screens that should do what you want. I’ve recently bought an “Oppo X2 lite” and a “Xiaomi Mi Note 10 Lite”.

They both have huge screens and appear to be ok.

Samsung A71

Same width and thickness as your Note 5, 9mm taller.
6.7" screen vs 5.7"
50% bigger battery, faster charging

£360/£390 depending on colour from Amazon.

I've had the previous A70 for a year and been very impressed.

Not to mention a decidedly mediocre screen and a pretty poor camera array

Check out oneplus phones.

I've no idea what the latest is as I'm still using my 6T and it still has all the performance it needs and a big screen. In fact if i destroyed it I'd look for a second hand to replace it

Agreed; I think the latest is a 7T. I'm still on a 3T & it gets Android updates, something my Motorola stopped doing after a couple of years & why I wouldn't go back to them.

What do you find is "mediocre" with the screen?

Sure the camera could be better, but OP didn't even mention that as a requirement. It will shoot 4K video, RAW stills, and I've been more than happy with the results. I do think the "action cam" is bit of a pointless gimmick though..

Why was the iPad terrible? What about it did you not like?

the obvious suggestion is a new iPhone SE 128GB brand new £469 https://www.johnlewis.com/apple-iphone-se-ios-13-4...

It will not have phantom updates that render it useless unlike an Android. Will easily live for 5 years unless you break it.

+1 They also do a G8 Power with a bigger battery.

Except he's asked for a 6"+ screen.

And tell me more about these "phantom updates" as the usual Android problem is a shortage of updates. Are they like the ones that Apple have just been fined €25m for?

I don't know why you feel the need to turn up on every Android thread spouting this nonsense. I've no idea what you mean by a phantom update. My Huawei Mate 10 Pro, a three year old design, has just received Android 10, it's second OS update and it's going as strong as the day I got it.

Ironically, I had an iPad2 that was rendered utterly useless with its second OS update. £400 wasted and it will be a long time before Apple get any more of my money. As for an iPhone SE, perhaps the OP doesn't want a phone that looks like it was designed in the previous century.

OP, how about the new One Plus Nord?

Latest is the 8 and 8pro - the 8 can be had for £599 for the base spec 8gb/128gb but they're never in stock.
The new Oneplus mid ranger called the Nord is due to go on sale in eight days, base spec is 8gb/128gb, 5g, 90hz 6.4" screen etc for £379, £100 more for 12gb/256gb - bit of a bargain https://www.oneplus.com/uk/oneplus-nord?from=nord

Edit - just seen the last two posts saying the same! 😂
