We're a family with android phones. 2 parents, 2 kids. Daughter would like a 'small' phone to start secondary school with. Even some of the android phones with small screens are bumped up with bigger surrounds, there doesn't seem to be anything obvious for her right now. The iPhone SE looks a nice size.

I did have iPods and early iPhone when you also needed iTunes on a pc/laptop and it was horrendously bloated. I've no doubt things have improved a lot, but how easy is it to live with one apple phone among an otherwise Google-based family (including phone tracking). Pretty much everything would need to be run as we do now, just a different branded phone if that's doable with apple.

I started my daughters on android phones. They soon wanted iPhones in order to fit in with their friends who all had Apple.

Most Goggle stuff works on iPhone (Gmail, Google Calendar, Keep, etc.)

Most iPhone stuff doesn’t work anywhere outside the Apple ecosystem.

Stuff such as phone tracking - well you might be able to find a third party workaround kludge, but the Android phone tracking won’t work.

Background - I used Android (with my wife) for 10 years+ but swapped over to Apple a year ago. Still use Google Home and Chromecast but everything else moved over as using, say, an iPhone and and iPad is an awful lot easier than an iPhone and and Android tablet.

I've just recently overcome my scepticism and gone to my first iphone, an SE2020 after years of android only. Had it about a fortnight. I'm surprised at how quickly I've adapted to it. It's a sensible size, but I needed more battery life, so bought a used iphone 7 battery case, which effectively doubles the battery life. However, it noticeably increases the size and weight. It's a compromise I can live with.

I used various Youtube vids to get the hang of it, if you apply yourself it becomes pretty intuitive pretty quickly. II like it and I'll probably stick with it now I've made the change.

Thanks all. To clarify, this will be one iphone in an android household (phones, tablets, smart stuff). I even had an app built for work on android (& android staff phones). Perfectly happy with android and no plans to change, just my daughter wants a small phone and android lacking in that department.

IPhone SE and for cross platform communication use WhatsApp. The new SE is a very nice phone.

You can use google maps for phone tracking on iOS as well as Android (assuming that is what you are using already).

Google apps all work, and in 2 months time when iOS 14 drops she’ll even be able to set Chrome and Gmail as her default browser and email app if she wishes laugh

Weird that you have that trouble. Everytime I open Google maps on my Android it shows the location of my youngest daughter, who also has an Android. It's done that for the last 3 years she's had a phone, so I guess it's not a new thing.

I meant the Android phone to iPhone tracking won’t work - you seem to be doing Android to Android.

You can theoretically set Google Maps to track your location on an iPhone, but it is half-arsed at doing it at best.

We use Life360 to "keep tabs" on where we all are. Our 'kids' are older, but happy to use this app - it comes in very handy to have food ready when someone is on the way home, etc etc!

Whatsapp is the main tricky thing IF you ever move between Android & Apple - even keeping the same number will result in losing the conversations, which is really irritating!

FWIW, we are mostly Apple here with one Android. Most apps are similar, but I had both phones for a year (work & play), & personally prefer the Apple...aside from the cost, of course.

We started using Life360 when i was the only Android user in our house, i have now moved over to Apple and we still use it, 100 times more accurate than Find My to the point where you can actually see the car moving if they are driving.

One of the Twitter leakers said the Google Pixel 4a will 100% be announced next Monday - rumoured specs say it'll be 6mm taller/2mm wider than the iPhone SE but have a 5.8" screen vs 4.7" of the SE. Alternatively the Pixel 3a is a half inch taller than an SE, 5.5" screen and £100 cheaper.
