So my pensioner father is expressing a interest in a tablet for a bit of silver surfing and tv/movie watching. I have a 12.9 iPad Pro but guessing my dad won’t be so fussy/willing to spend £1000 on one !

I am looking at getting him one as a easy Xmas gift so what is the amazon fire tablet like ? Also what would be a good sim only data deal as they don’t have internet at home ?

Lastly , as i already have Netflix and amazon video , can he share this with me ? Legally obviously...

Thanks.

My wife went through this, she opted for exactly the same tablet she uses herself. The rationale? When mum's struggling easier for her to talk it trough on the phone.

Ipad, never get elderly parents or grandparents anything else, ipads just work.

I had an Nexus 7 with a SIM years ago, it was unusable within about a year, Android updates that came out for the wifi version just didn't get released for the version with a SIM.

My mum got a Kindle fire. I was concerned that she'd find it hard to use and maybe an iPad would be easier, but she's been absolutely fine with it.

My 74-y-o FiL gets on well with his 10" Fire and it's been a godsend since he lost his wife and particularly during lockdown. He's even managed a video chat.

We also have one, and the kids have 7" Fires, so that helps. Ours is 3+ years old and going strong, but we've recently had one of the kid's ones fail. But it was replaced without quibble under warranty before we'd even sent the old one back.

I just ordered this for my wife.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B086DDWBFY/ref...

As for the data you could use something like this.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Three-Mobile-Pay-Broadban...

There are some that are unlimited data but last 30 days.

As for netflix sorry no idea.

She wanted to steal my ASUS vivobook flip just to browse the web but no chance, she like me is getting a tad blind trying to look at the phone to do anything.

Can you not pick one up second hand - even one a little bit older?

You can also put some controls on stuff to stop them screwing up too much (ask me how I know)

Sounds like me. I’m in my seventies and fancied an old Escort to help me relive my youth while I can still afford one and am just about fit enough to enjoy it.

All I got were bloody cars! What am I doing wrong?

My late father had an iPad Air 2. There's nothing easier to use than an Apple product and with the elderly, you just want something reliable that works and easy to setup and use. Depends on your budget I suppose.

What's complicated about a Fire?? Or any other Android come to that?

Absolutely nothing - but if trying to support something remotely it's far easier if you have the same device and familiarity.

I suppose 2x Fires would still be cheaper than an iPad...

I’d get an iPad or a fire 10.

If he’s got an iPhone then go for an iPad as it much the same.

thumbup Gotcha. The UI is the same so a £50 7" Fire would work for support.

I've never used a fire so can't comment. I can comment on the ease of use of an iPad as we have 2 in our house. I've had a Galaxy S9 work mobile for a long time now and it's really not the nicest thing to use or particularly intuitive. I can use it, I work in technology and I'm not elderly but even I find it a pain to use.

My Mum 79 has a Fire 10
Used for Internet, Email, Shopping, Reading Books, Catchup TV and Printing.
Works fine. Has stopped using the Win 10 Laptop I got her.

iPad a bit more user Friendly but the Kindle does the job fairly easily at a good price.
