Listening to the local radio earlier it is being classed as a 'new town' being built

That'll make the A326 even more delightful.

I suppose it was inevitable this would happen once the power station closure was announced...

That is a lot of development to stick at the end of an already busy road, and will basically be in the same situation as Gosport finds itself now with horrendous traffic in and out during peak periods.
They are making noises about re-opening the existing freight only rail line to passengers, but the route through the refinery and lack of timetable capacity at the Southampton end would make this near impossible in reality, Network Rail don't seem particularly supportive of the idea either.

I also have doubts as to the vision shown on the proposals and can see the reality being a facade of semi-interesting architecture hiding an endless sprawl of thrown-together modern dwellings crammed as tightly as possible into the available space, before gradually encroaching further back into the forest in future years...the power station may go but the whole lot will still be in the shadow of the ExxonMobil oil refinery which chucks out some interesting smelling emmisions to the waterside on occasion.

Personally I'd slap a preservation order on the power station chimney, remains of the turbine hall and the "spaceship" control room and have it as some sort of industrial museum perhaps housing currently rarely seen artifacts from Wroughton etc...obviously unrealistic I know sadly!

An amendment was also passed that proposed cycle routes must be completed before any of the homes are occupied.
Canals and bicycles, it's Hampshire's very own Amsterdam. (Recreational drugs optional)

My sister lives in Fawley village and it already takes an age to get as far as Totton

Another thousand car movements down the A326 sounds like a recipe for disaster! I'm sure the plans i read included some road improvements, none of which included a dual carriageway.

Nothing strikes fear into my heart like a Hampshire County Council sign promising upcoming road "improvements".

It'll a cycle lane up the side of the A326, removal of the second lane on the dual bits and reduced speed limits.

This. Just as they have done on the Avenue. Absolute joke! And also a dedicated bus lane on the Northam Road. It's as though they are trying to make Southampton a no-go area for cars.

The road in and out of the peninsula can't cope as it is - what fun it'll be with thousands of extra vehicle movements per day.

Nor will it help the congestion in Lyndhurst as many will now avoid the bypass when travelling from Southampton to Lymington and surrounding areas..

It'll a cycle lanea poorly thought out and unusable cycle lane up the side of the A326, removal of the second lane on the dual bits and reduced speed limits.
More likely.

I didn't even realise it had closed but then I haven't lived in the area since 1977. I remember as a kid going to an open day there with my father when it first opened. My Dad being an electrical engineer was trying to imbue a young teenage son in to the benefits of becoming an engineer; it almost worked hehe

It's also just as well I've given up sailing in the Solent. I always relied on the chimney to know where I was!

I did the tour around 1988. The switchgear hall and the 'Millenium Falcon' are still stuck in my mind.

Look forward the comedy that is HCC's version of road improvements. Sensibly I relocated to West Wales 6 years ago!

South Western Railway ran a "fact finding train" to investigate the potential re-opening of the Fawley branch line today.

Wow, talk about isolated down there. A an e-bike and a GOOD cycle lane to Hythe would make it quite attractive to commute to Southampton though.
