Listening to the local radio earlier it is being classed as a 'new town' being built

I suppose it was inevitable this would happen once the power station closure was announced...
That is a lot of development to stick at the end of an already busy road, and will basically be in the same situation as Gosport finds itself now with horrendous traffic in and out during peak periods.
They are making noises about re-opening the existing freight only rail line to passengers, but the route through the refinery and lack of timetable capacity at the Southampton end would make this near impossible in reality, Network Rail don't seem particularly supportive of the idea either.
I also have doubts as to the vision shown on the proposals and can see the reality being a facade of semi-interesting architecture hiding an endless sprawl of thrown-together modern dwellings crammed as tightly as possible into the available space, before gradually encroaching further back into the forest in future years...the power station may go but the whole lot will still be in the shadow of the ExxonMobil oil refinery which chucks out some interesting smelling emmisions to the waterside on occasion.
Personally I'd slap a preservation order on the power station chimney, remains of the turbine hall and the "spaceship" control room and have it as some sort of industrial museum perhaps housing currently rarely seen artifacts from Wroughton etc...obviously unrealistic I know sadly!

I'm sure the plans i read included some road improvements, none of which included a dual carriageway.
Nothing strikes fear into my heart like a Hampshire County Council sign promising upcoming road "improvements".It'll a cycle lane up the side of the A326, removal of the second lane on the dual bits and reduced speed limits.

I didn't even realise it had closed but then I haven't lived in the area since 1977. I remember as a kid going to an open day there with my father when it first opened. My Dad being an electrical engineer was trying to imbue a young teenage son in to the benefits of becoming an engineer; it almost worked
It's also just as well I've given up sailing in the Solent. I always relied on the chimney to know where I was!

I did the tour around 1988. The switchgear hall and the 'Millenium Falcon' are still stuck in my mind.

Look forward the comedy that is HCC's version of road improvements. Sensibly I relocated to West Wales 6 years ago!
South Western Railway ran a "fact finding train" to investigate the potential re-opening of the Fawley branch line today.
