My 1999 2.5 Boxster is throwing up P1340 -1 which I understand is Timing Chain out of Position - Bank 1.

There is also slight misfire at idle when the car is warm which may be related.

There are cracks in some coils which I’m replacing.

Any other causes or will it just be the timing is out?

Thanks

If it is a chain, and it is reporting an issue there, it will need proper investigation.

Get a proper tech with a scope and they can scope it and compare to a known good to see if indeed it is actually out.
Because if it is, the chain could likely be stretched badly, or there could be a tensioner issue, both of which could be pretty serious.

As to whether that also relates to any misfires could be investigated too.

It'll most likely need the chains, guides and tensioners done.

Might get away with doing the the tensioners as they were redesigned to be longer to take the slop out for longer. Especially if you get the cold start rattle.

If its throwing up a code its probably over 10 degrees out. Which is a lot. The early cars only have a sensor on bank 1 & bank 2 is likely to be just as bad. If you are lucky the tensioner pads will be worn, unlucky and the chains are stretched. Best get it to a specialist for a proper diagnosis.

Thanks for the replies.

The probable causes all sound complex and as such expensive to fix unfortunately.
