Small but powerful SUV, anything to match a used X1 23d?

Not the prettiest car, but as a small SUV, it surely has the best engine?
2 litre biturbo diesel. 220 bhp and 60 mpg.
Anything else out there around £10,000 used with a better engine and similar space inside?

Real world average for the X1 23d is around 40mpg & on a run 40-45mpg maybe more if you're driving like a nun.

In terms of looks the Infiniti EX is slightly better with a much nicer fit & finish as well a spec/age but you pay for it at the pump with 30mpg average & 30-35mpg average on the motorway the best I've personally average was 38mpg on a run back from Scotland but the first figure is the norm that Ive got but it is a smoother 3.0d.

Assume £10k gets you a Mark 1 X1? Just be aware that model fared very badly for customer satisfaction/reliability. I think the Mk2 is meant to be a lot better.

As for alternatives the obvious one is a Mini Countryman Cooper S. Probably quite similar as they share a lot of components?

Factoring in that petrol is cheaper than diesel then it may be more tempting...

There's a 3p per litre difference between petrol & diesel the fuel figures are just slightly worse than the Infiniti on fuel as you have to work it a bit harder.

They are not really competitors for the small X1 though - more in line with an X3.

They are because the OP asked about SUV's (not the size) in his price bracket which is exactly what they are.
