I was browsing the classifieds the other day, and was slightly floored to see the original TT RS (mk2 TT generation with the 2.5L TFSI) have depreciated down to 15k GBP...which was a bit of a surprise.

As new cars, the TT always suffered comparison with the Boxster/Cayman - indeed, when buying a small German sportscar, I bought the Porsche without hestitation over the standard TT - but the RS was always something a little different, almost like a Germanic coupe version of a Mitsubishi Evo. A high-tech, boosted, AWD, all-weather weapon....just not the sportscar the Cayman is.

However, now that they are getting quite affordable, and knowing that you are a remap away from over 400hp / 450lb/ft of torque (!), these things seem to have a different appeal. I mean they are half the price of a Golf R, a third the price of a cheap GTR, but seem to offer entry to the same club.

What does PH say? Do the original reviews that grumbled about steering feel and chassis still hold when they are 5k cheaper than a new Suzuki Swift Sport, and a remap away from the kind of power you once needed a 911 turbo to achieve?

/edit - thanks spellcheck for the nonsense headline laugh

Nope. Nothing "laugh" about the headline.

That's down to you for not checking before you hit "submit" or "post" (whatever the button is called).

I know I'll get abuse for being a "spelling nazi" or "having nothing better to do with my time", but I do get annoyed by people who try and offload their own carelessness onto spellcheck. You're asking people to engage with you, to offer their views, their experience, maybe even expertise, for free.Yet you abrogate responsibility for your post to an electronic device, not yourself. Is it any wonder that some people are a tad concerned about how AI is going to influence the world?

Sorry, it's not personal, it's just the culmination of many people on PH blaming stuff on auto-correct, rather than accepting they didn't check it before posting.

I'm now breathing deeply through a brown paper bag, with a stiff drink to hand.

I think the problem with the TTRS is that within its segment, despite its power and grip it still never managed to stand out from the crowd.

Unlike the other RS models which are held as benchmarks in their respective segments.

They also arguably didn’t have the necessary differentiation for a sports car (club sport type versions have more niche and collector appeal).
I don’t think the car itself is any more or less flawed than something like an RS3, it’s just in this package it’s never been a standout offering.

Seem to remember reading they were front wheel drive bias? Imagine that would put people who were looking at Caymans / z4m off a bit.

I can’t remember seeing one on the road though and there’s something to be said for going against the grain.

I like them.

Good performance, tunable and look good to my eyes. From what I read a proper geo setup helps with the understeer too.

Well, it's certainly a lot less than brilliant, but aside from my own challenges, I just do not understand the mentality of people blaming mistakes on technology. The individual is still the final arbiter (for now at least!).

Cheap very tuneable. I think it has potential to become a bit of a cult car.

I like it.

Arguably not the benchmark for the segment but so what?

Very pitiful indeed. People make mistakes for a number of reasons, get over it.

Lovely car.
