Cheap Economic Family Estate - Octavia, Superb...?

So, £5000 budget, possibly a tad higher if necessary. The main aim here is cheap to run. Parts aren't an issue, but mainly interested in tax, economy etc. Huge boot required, rear legroom unimportant as it'll just be for baby seats, but more is a benefit I guess.
So far I'm thinking of sticking to VAG stuff, as within the family we all have VAG cars and hence all the specailist tools to do timing belts, tensioners, VAGCOM cable etc.
Mainly just now deciding between a 2015 MK3 Octavia Estate 2.0 TDI DSG and a 2012 Superb Estate 2.0 TDI CR 170 4x4 which came up locally. Both are up for about the £4400 mark, Elegance spec, and on similar miles, 150k vs 128k respectively. A family member has a CR 140 Superb Estate which are £30 road tax, but they are rare as hens teenth, almost all are 170s or autos which whacks the tax up. The local 4x4 seems like an amazing combination of utility, economy, space and comfort. But seeing possible MPG figures for the 2.0 TDI Octavia being 20 mpg higher, does make me consider going for the cheaper to run option. They're also 610 vs 633 litre boots. So, almost the same size despite the Superb being the bigger car.
So how are those Mk3 Octavia DSG boxes? Car does have a good history with it, I assume the high mileage DSG monetary timebomb issue from the first boxes is a thing of the past? I don't mind getting any tools necessary to work on the box, do my own oil changes on it etc. But I also don't want it to cost much to fix if something fairly routine does go wrong with it.
Likewise, should I be looking elsewhere? Comparative A6s are so heavy, the tax is much higher and the MPG much lower. Not sure an A4 would be quite big enough in the booty.
