I do believe some of my favourite posts are the owner reviews. It would be wonderful if anyone wished to describe their watch(es) in-depth, highlighting the positives and the negatives, for generally curious readers like myself or potential buyers alike.

Eh? Owner’s reviews are great, and particularly those on PH as they typically come from those for whom watches aren’t their only interest, hence a slightly different approach and attitude!

Given it’s a forum offering discussion of disparate enthusiasms, I don’t think that approach quite cuts it: “Here’s me new Ferrari. It has four wheels and I likes to drive it”.

I like owner reviews. Someone who has lived with a watch for a bit is likelier to have picked-up upon the subtle design characteristics, functionality, comfort etc. And perhaps less biased than the usual review sites who can be afraid to upset the big brands that feed them.

I disagree also. Owner reviews are often the most honest and can be good to read when wishing to pass the time or can out you on to a watch you hadn't previously considered before.

“Someone who has lived with a watch for a bit” Subtle design characteristics! Functionality! Jesus do you buy a watch or marry it!! I know this is a watch forum and a good one at that, but there does seem to be a lot of “i got the call” pulled the trigger ect ect on here! It seems there are two camps, you have guys that just like the look of a watch for what ever reason, and those that like the look of a watch “and get the call” then spend the rest of there day making a online video on how all the buttons work, while the other camp that “didnt pull the trigger” and just bought the watch are doing something else? Im not saying who is right or wrong but it does seem to me that the “daily wearer’s” and wrist time camp is a bit more touchy than the other camp?? Im not trying to be arsey but i think there is a bit of a diffrence between a watch and a car.

It's the difference between buying a watch because you want one and buying a watch because they are a hobby.

You can't apply logic to hobbies. You would never catch me potholing or collecting antique teddy bears, but some people can't get enough of it and will gain vast amounts of knowledge that's useless outside of the hobby.

Yep, there are absolutley different levels of enthusiam - some get off on aesthetics and/or brand alone, whereas others like to deep dive into the history, design, finishing, mechanics, accuracy etc. Some even buy them just to tell the time and nothing more. No camp is 'wrong', it's just whatever floats your boat.

There are plenty of odd interests & forums out there - knives, torches etc. - that I find incomprehensible, but that's ok. They're not my thing, but I can understand how they might well be someone else's.

When it comes to enthusiasts, I think cars and watches have more in common than you think. There's a particular geeky mindset - mainly male, it has to be said - that likes mechanical things and the engineering that goes into them.

Sure, on face value there's more functions, complexity, bells & whistles etc. with a car, but if you were to take a look at some of the dedicated watch forums out there, you'd probably be surprised how deep the levels of interest run. Arguments over coaxial vs. traditional lever escapements, how the typography of the number '4' can add value, who polishes metal better... it's an endless & odd rabbit hole to fall down, if you wish.

To be fair thats a good answer, as i said i wasnt trying to be arsey, but sometimes i read stuff on here and i does make me wonder if people really dont have anything better to do? You are right what you say tho, i have got a few Rolex and i couldnt tell you what movement they have got in them and to be honest i dont even care! I bought them because i like the look of them? Everyone to there own i suppose, if we all liked te same watches it would be boring! God help us if everyone only liked rolex! They dont make enough as it is lol

Don't see anything wrong with someone reviewing a watch. It can be quite useful. Always good to get someone's opinion even if you don't agree. Don't know what the fuss is about. Chill out. It's only a watch.

I have a AP Royal Oak Chrono 41mm with a white face.

My review is its broken 3 times, but repaired by AP, and it tells the time well sometimes. Iv'e obviously never used the stop watch function.

it scratches up lots, and has a few dinks in it

not sure what else i can add.

I also have a AP Royal Oak Chrono 41mm but with a blue dial.

My review is that it has never broken and it tells the time well. The stop watch function I use a lot which works extremely well in the way I want it too.

It scratches up lots, and has a few dinks in it.

Not sure what else i can add apart from it being an iconic watch in the history of watchmaking, designed by a master.

I have no idea what adanoided means (nor did Google) and I don’t own a briefcase.

I quite like the OPs idea. I’m watch obsessed and although my collection is modest, every watch has its place and you do find each watch has its own character.

Rather than sniping and being needlessly rude if you don’t like the idea do you really need to comment?

Anyway to get the thread back on track here’s a brief review of one of the rarer watches I own. My Omega Speedmaster reduced white dial.

After spotting this watch on eBay one evening I knew I had to have it. Unfortunately it disappeared without a trace and it took me another 12 months to find another one.

This model was only available in certain Japanese department stores for a limited time. The plain white dial and stainless steel combination creates a timeless looking watch that’s a little different to other speedmasters.

At 39mm it is very small, I don’t have the largest wrists in the world so it works for me. It suits being worn with a shirt more than it does a casual outfit.

The plastic Crystal is very prone to scratches and the movement isn’t best know for reliability. Mine has been very reliable and in the 4 years of ownership it hasn’t missed a beat.

It’s taught me that smaller watches have their place, as do vintage watches. It’s by far my go to watch, but it is one of my favourites.

I love watches and like to collect and read about them, but just because i dont feel the need to write a fking 10 page report on how it feels when im wearing it or if the strap is made of 316 st/steel and not 304!! Everyone to there own but fk me a lot on here are like a lot of little girls. One post replied that i dont like any watches that doesnt have rolex on it! Show me were i put that! So, here are a few brief thoughts on the Bulova Lunar Pilot.

Firstly, this watch is powered by a quartz movement. For many of you this might make it instantly of no interest - fair enough. However it’s a rather swish high-accuracy Bulova 262khz movement that is reckoned to be accurate to within 10 seconds a year. I’ll take that.

The story behind how a prototype Bulova chronograph with a Universal Geneve movement came to be used on the moon has been told elsewhere, and is well worth a read. The recreation takes several styling cues from the original, in particular the chrono pushers which are (as far as I know) unique to the LP and a delight to use.

The case is brushed steel and looks almost like titanium. It wears pretty big, to be honest, which has been an ongoing criticism of the recreation. The (sapphire) crystal sits a couple of MM proud of the case which is definitely a bit weird. Lug width is 20mm.

The watch comes with a faux-NASA Velcro Nato strap and an OK leather strap with a carbon effect on it. I swapped this out for a black leather strap with white stitching.

TL;DR

Nice watch, wears big, really interesting back story, a great alternative to the Speedmaster for 10% of the price.

I think it’s the lunar landing coordinates of Dave Scott‘s mission. Something like that, anyway.
