BMW Running In Service
Discussion
What’s the download guys, is this needed?
Just bought an M40i X3 (used) and under the Service Plan It says it needs a Running In, how important is this?
I heard it’s meant to happen around 1500 miles but clearly the previous owner never did that so now I need to resolve under my service and it’s hit 2300 miles... any issues?

Sorry can’t answer your Q - but following the thread as looking myself for a M40i.
If you not mind saying age, dealership where you purchased - as many now gone, and looking to buy by end of august. I’m after a unicorn car - Pano roof and towbar. One in Durham sold more or less day it was advertised.

Didn't know any non M car required a running in service.
No mention of one on the BMW service site which gives prices. I checked a random 20 plate, the newest XM340i on Approved Used list.
https://www.bmw.co.uk/en/topics/owners/service-wor...
But if it does I would get it done.
But check to see if it has been done and not uploaded onto I Drive. BMW could tell you if it was done at a BMW dealer, who can upload, but sometimes neglect.

Therein lies your issue, not many I’ve seen in 40i (used) with those two features. The M40i I picked up (Sytner) just came in and didn’t even have pics up on the website - I went to view and bought in person. They had a tonne of diesels but 1 petrol which was what I bought, there’s just so few around. I wanted park assist plus ideally but this didn’t have it so had drop it as was a good deal we agreed.
Lastly, SUV space with a 4.8secs 0-60 engine, she’s an absolute blast to drive.

Cheers - as you say - it’s likely going to have to be a compromise re features. Towbar can be retrofitted/aftermarket. Pano - unless you take a can opener to the car .... Will keep checking within the groups (Sytner/Berry/James etc) and hopefully get a car due soon too.
Enjoy !!
Ignore the running in service and see how many prospective buyers walk away from the car immediately come sale time!
The running in service is there for a reason: It's carried out to flush out particles of metal that have been scraped away from the cylinder bores in the first 1500 miles as the engine beds in.
Ignore the running in service, and the smallest of those particles can be pumped back around the engine, over and over again, causing damage, and premature engine wear.
You could lose thousands in re-sale, for the price of @ £230 for the running in service - That makes little sense to me!

But it doesn't need one and there isn't one in the service schedule. The running in service is there for a reason: It's carried out to flush out particles of metal that have been scraped away from the cylinder bores in the first 1500 miles as the engine beds in.

thanks all. You're right, M40i doesn't require full running in service, only full M models.
Now get this, the BMW Service plan isn't managed by BMW, but another company called EMAC. I now need to contact them, cancel the entire plan (as they set it up incorrectly to include a Running In Service) and then rebuy the plan.
What a waste of time...!

Sorry another quick Q - as Sytner dealer I spoke with said they can't do a service plan on a used car .... Was yours through BMW/Dealership, or aftermarket/external ? Again thanks for answering what I'll be going through shortly (hopefully)

Yeh Sytner seemed a bit weird about service plan when I was in the dealership. I just went online directly through the BMW Service Plan site to set up a couple of days after I bought. Now obviously i'm waiting a refund on that, to then retake out the plan. So just make sure if you take out the plan you amend it from including Running In Service which the M40i doesn't require. Should be around £1200 in total. Again thanks for answering what I'll be going through shortly (hopefully)
Did you get any luck on the car search?

Ah i wanted the Pano roof but it wasn't a must have. I really wanted the park assist plus but seems so few had them. Thanks for the pointers and info - PH can be a great place !1
Either way, i picked up a 19 plate with 2000 miles on the clock so was totally good value for what i got.

Not great as it is an essential service, run in oil etc changed for the proper stuff. Afaik it can be hard to sell the car later as most people know to ask if the RIS happened on time or indeed at all.Just bought an M40i X3 (used) and under the Service Plan It says it needs a Running In, how important is this?
