Just lost my beautiful 18 year old cat - gutted

Hi all

Our lovely 18 year old moggie has not been herself for a few weeks and was getting very thin. Taken her to the vets a couple of times but there was nothing immediately wrong other than her age.

Then my mother in law popped into our house and found her collapsed in a puddle of wee. We made the decision to have her put down.

She was still purring and gently miaowing. The vet said she was there mentally but her body had failed. We are all utterly heartbroken. She was the only pet I've had and really part of the family. I can't stop thinking about it.

My little boy was distraught and cried himself to sleep.

Sorry for your loss.

Having had to put a few to sleep over the years, I have to say it doesn’t get any easier. The good thing is you will get over it. You will be left with great memories once the pain has dissipated.

18 years is a good age for a cat.

We lost our two, at 17, within three weeks of one another. One had a suspected cancer, and died very traumatically the morning before his 'final' appointment at the vets, and then his brother iust gave up, and died peacefully three weeks later.

It's incredibly tough, and I feel for you. Not much else to say, I'm afraid.

That’s grief. You are hoping she is there, it’s part of the process your brain is going through mate.

It gets easier but it’s also good to get out on a nice walk today and out of the house, it helps.

So sorry to hear that. We lost our dear old mate Buddy just at the start of lockdown. What a big gap in your life a long established pet can leave behind them.

I feel for you. Was in a similar situation 5 years ago, 15 y/o and had to be PTS failed kidneys. Not ashamed to say that the room got a little dusty.

My cat is starting to suffer from old age now and we have discussed her future.
She went blind about two months ago.
She's a cantankerous old moggy who just bit me for stroking her 1 too many times but I love her to bits.

Sorry for your loss. Our cat took the last vet trip recently after 16 years. Losing pets leaves a big hole in your life but the good memories remain.

Sorry to hear about your loss heisthegaffer. As others have said, 18 years is a very good age for a cat and I’m sure she had a happy, loving and safe home.

We’ve lost four cats over the years. Three to road accidents and one to a dog attack. Every time it’s heartbreaking and I still miss them all.

In the months to come you will feel ready to offer another one or two cats a loving home. And when you do, please show some support to local independent animal shelters.

Losing a furry member of the family is really stty, but offering an abandoned pet a safe and loving home does go some way towards healing that wound.

Still sad but equally we're grateful that she was with us for so long and always healthy.

Not sure what we'll do going forward. I'm not sure I want another cat as it won't be Marley but my little lad is keen.

I'm more tempted with a dog but we'll have a think about it and then decide.
