S-Tronic A3 Cab rolls while in Park?
Discussion
Just picked up a 2 year old A3 Cab 1.5 TFSI with the S-Tronic gearbox. We've got a fairly flat driveway and so often I'll just leave our cars in Park and not bother with the handbrake.... Except with the Audi it will actually roll forwards (a good few feet) while in Park.
Before I bother with the dealer, I'm guessing this isn't normal?!

Thanks Doug :-) Yes, I do know how to avoid this 'issue', I'm more thinking should I contact the dealer to book it in to be looked at while it is still under warranty (and potentially avoid a large s-tronic bill down the line out of warranty) or whether they all 'do that'.... Maybe you help me as you've got a similar car?
That doesn't sound normal, but as above the 'Park' function on the gearbox is a transmission brake and not intended to prevent the car rolling away - you're putting a lot of load on the transmission if you're relying on it to hold the car, and the amount it rolls will depend on weight of car / angle of drive / compression of engine. Use the proper electronic parking brake as intended on anything other than a level surface. Only time mine get left without the park brake on is in the garage which is perfectly flat.

My Audi automatically puts on the Electric Handbrake in Park when I turn off the ignition.
I would have thought they all did that?
Obviously they dont.
Why not?
depends if you've got your seatbelt on when you switch off the engine. I take mine off to reverse into my garage, so it doesn't engage the parking brake automatically. It's always in P on the gear selector when I switch off.I would have thought they all did that?

Mine doesn't do it so I suspect it's in the settings. I would have thought they all did that?

If leaving a car of an extended period, it's better to leave the handbrake off if you can.
OP's doesn't sound right at all.

Ah! Righto, I'll try that. However, I did change a lot of my settings with Carista.

As the above from Adrian, I would just use the handbrake as intended. I'm assuming it's an auto hold so auto off? They work so well, it really shouldn't be an issue.
I have left my handbrake on for 2 weeks whilst parked at airports & all is ok on return.
You do want to do a battery check though beforehand...
Just to update this topic for those interested!
Yes, the automatic handbrake did work and would automatically apply when parking, or at traffic lights for example. If you turned off this feature then it's down to you to manually put the electronic handbrake on.
If you forgot to put the handbrake on then it would still roll in park. Absolutely agree that use of the handbrake is a good idea!
Audi diagnosed that the car had had an issue with a gearbox seal leak earlier in it's life which meant the gearbox had been removed. Apparently when it was re-fitted they didn't adjust the lever / cable which stops the car rolling in park.
Fixed for free under warranty. Now works at it should!
