My lad is after another car and has set his sights on a 2008/58 Audi 2.0 TSFI A5. I've done the usual google searches on what to look for but wondered if owners could share any more info, The car is the 211ps version with 118K and FSH if that makes any difference.

There have been threads in the past about these engines using a LOT of oil. Some cars have had new engines to solve it. I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will be along soon ...

Dr G on here is very knowledgeable about all things Audi.

Ah that’s it... oil burners of note. I guess no real way of knowing if the one he’s looking at drinks oil or not until it’s too late ? Not like the owner will happily say “it’s all great but goes through oil like crazy” .

Pretty certain the worst years oil wise is 2010-12.

Mine is 2011 & is going in for a rebuild in 2 weeks. Audi UK are making a very sizeable contribution as mine is sub 60k miles.

A5OC.com is a good read if you have plenty of time. The usual mix of some very helpful & knowledgable people there

If its not a Quattro forget it, that engine with FWD simply overwhelms the chassis, torque steer, wheel tramp, far too much torque which the car cant put down even with huge 255 19's. I ended up getting rid of mine as it was driving me nuts, any time you wanted to make a swift exit, say from a junction, useless, and in the wet even worse.

The rest of the car itself is good, just not FWD.

Well he bought it..... and broke down 150 miles later a mere 12 miles form home. Clutch shat itself and stinks to hell and back. Drove perfectly right up until it failed so doubt seller knew.

Happy days

Wow, that’s some going, bad luck... any warranty or was it a private sale?

Private sale, bloke seems genuine enough and offered to refund £185 which is half the cost of the clutch kit without labour. Told my lad to bite his hand off !

I sold a modified Car for £10k that had not missed a beat for 7 years, bloke broke down on the way home with toasted alternator . I offered to full cover all and any expenses but he just replied “welcome to modified cars lol” . He was cool as ever and said that’s life.

Son feels a little less mortified today, more annoyed at the weeks wait for a garage slot rather the actual cost (which is projected to be 800-1000 with labour and flywheel)
