Can I mount a motorbike Bb4l-b sealed lead acid battery on its side for the central locking override button on my vx220 turbo or should it be a gel battery, what's the safest please folks.

Ordinary flooded lead acid batteries are still vented even if they are notionally 'sealed', and need to be kept the right way up. I don't understand what you'#re trying to do, but if involves a large 12V battery mounted on its side you may find a gel or AGM type battery more suitable.

Peter, the vx220 as a motorbike battery lay on its side in the boot which powers an override switch if you've a flat battery, unfortunately I'm struggling to get the original gel type battery.

Plenty of gel batteries available, you don’t need a dedicated type, look at the motorsports catalogs, Deamontweeks, Merlin etc

AGM batteries can be mounted on their side (but not upside down!). AGM motorcycle batteries are very common e.g. Motobat, Varta Powerflex, Yuasa Maintenance-free etc.
