1.6 HDI (Peugeot) 2008 whining

Hello all

I am not too familiar with diesel engines and was hoping someone could perhaps point me in the right direction, apart from putting it in the scrap heap. It almost sounds like a cat meowing!

I have 2008 Peugeot van with the 1.6 hdi engine. It making a siren sound, pretty loud and quite annoying. I am guessing it is the dreaded turbo that these engines seem to be favourites to fail with.

It does drive just great until it comes to a hil and then I have to work down the gear and it does lose quite a bit of power. I had hope this might be simply a caked up egr or the turbo is very dirty, but this very noisy whine has me concered. It is the engine as it does with in N, with the clutch dipped etc.

I've only had the van a week and feel a bit of a moron for taking it until it was checked out more but such is life and here we are.

Remove belt and listen for noise, it may have gone

Thanks guys, I never thought of the belt. It does sound like it's coming from that area rather than the front where the turbo is located.

I have another listen tomorrow when it's light. I am not home until the weekend so I can check and find a fix at the weekend.

There is also a ticking/chirping sound that sounds like a belt issue too, so yeah what is suggested is starting to make sense.

Just hoping it's not a cambelt or waterpump issue.

Cambelts and water pumps are service items, so it wouldn't be unheard of for them to need replacing. If they haven't been done before, then they are due. It is never worth playing cambelt roulette. However, your issue may be unrelated.

When I got my Fiat Panda in January it made a weird howl/whine when accelerating sometimes, no real pattern to it. Turned out it was on its original cambelt and water pump, 16 years later..! The water pump was completely knackered, replacing that sorted it. Again, this may well be nothing to do with your issue, but worth considering.

Edit - to add, I haven't listened to your video (yet) but I had a Skoda Octavia with a failing/failed turbo and it started off as a progressive siren type noise, when it finally went, it sounded like a police car was on top of me constantly when accelerating.

Had a listen to the video. Doesn't sound anything like any failing turbo I've heard. As above, it sounds like a tensioner. It does ever so slightly sound like the bad water pump from my Panda, but it was much louder at the time. Fingers crossed it is just a tensioner.

Thanks guys, 99% sure the whining noise is from the belt side of the engine so yes kind of rules out the turbo.

I checked on Youtube, I've heard a few alternators with worn bearings sounding like that. It is pretty loud, sounds like the noise an old worn steering pump makes, that groaning whining noise.

If it's the cambelt or water pump then it then so be it, the previous owner assured me it was recently changed and that the receipt for the work is in the envelope he gave me. However that envelope is at home and I'm away for a few days. I just hope the water pump was changed too, because in my opinion both should be done together.

When I get home I'll investigate further.

Kind of hoping so, a lot easier than a failing water pump!

I do hear a bit of a chirping/ticking noise from idle that sounds like the belt area, there no real whine at idle but as soon as gas is given the whine is very noticable.

I'll take the belt off when I get home at the weekend and run it without the belt, see if that eliminates the noise. If so then I'll check the alternation, pulleys etc.

Just an update, took belt off and ran the engine and no whine. Happy for that, turns out it was the clutch pulley on the alternator was siezed up. So I replaced the pulley and belt, all sorted.
