A couple of oil questions please
Discussion
Firstly I know the recommended oil for my 2007 335i is Castrol edge LL04 but I saw on line Shell Helix Ultra ECT for BMW's 5w 30 LL04, 20 litres for £85. will that be ok? Bare in mind I have put lesser oil in when I needed a top up once, but secondly is there a shelf life for oil as that would keep me going for a while I think, even if I changed it every 4k, I only to 3k a year any way. that's £4.25 a litre.
So long as the Shell oil is accredited with meeting BMW LL04 criteria it will be absolutely fine.
BMW switched from Castrol Edge to Shell Helix Ultra a few years ago.
My BMW Indy said he understood it was because Castrol wouldn't supply it in a BMW branded container with no Castrol logo, but Shell would!

As others have said; no need for the premium branded oilsI personally use TripleQX 5W40 from ECP in my M54 3.0; that and the Mann filters are perfect for the car; meets the necessary BMW oil specs and can be bought cheaper, in bulk, via carparts4less/gsfcarparts on eBay than via ECP on their website, even with their discount code.
They're all the same group FYI
